How many of you leave your system on when you leave for a while? Poll!

I read once, where a guy left and came back and found his powersupply had flamed out and left some scorchmarks on the wall. I got a little paranoid, and stopped leaving my system on when I leave. Am I being paranoid? How big is a risk that I can burn my apartment down? And yes, I have insurance. 😉

If I'm leaving for an extended period of time, I usually unplug all of my electronic stuff. Better to be safe than sorry! 🙂

I'll turn it off sometimes in the middle of the summer because my room gets too hot (and paying for A/C to work against the computer doesn't make my parents happy)

But other than that, I only really turn it off when I need to unplug it or make some changes to it.

I used to leave mine on all the time UNTIL one day while i was in another room it started melting! Literally. Luckily I was home at the time because it was really smoking away and sitting near some papers. It wasnt due to not getting enough ventilation either. Something inside shorted out. I had to have the whole thing replaced. Luckily it was still under warranty. But now i dont leave it on unless im only going to be gone for a little bit.

Btw.. 'it' = laptop 🙂

oh no...laptops melt??

i should start turning mine off every once in a while then...!!!

Up 24/7 except when I'm gone for a few days. I suppose there is some risk if the power supply decides to burn up or whatever, but isn't there risk involved with just about any piece of electronic equipment? I feel better using good quality components in my system though.

i leave all of my systems on all of the time , i have all of them on UPS , so i don't turn them off for storms

only if the power goes out, then i shut them down

They said it was a freak incident... but they also said it does happen. I was a bit peeved!

I usually put my computer in Hibernation mode when I leave work or if I'm finished using my home computer for the day. If I'm going home for the weekend or will be gone for a while, I'll turn it off completely.

My system at work is always on.

I didn't think of that. Thousands of systems here at the place I work. Policy is to leave them on so they get software updates over night through the network. Never heard of one burning up.....

Mine are on 24/7 unless I leave town for more than 2 days. Of course all my monitors turn off automatically after 10 minutes.

there is a lot of discussion that power cycling is more damageing than constant power....with a 'green' PC you are using little power at idle....I don't trust my apartments power so I power down at least 5x a week.

However once I get a house and rewire my PC's will probably always be online.
