How many of you have taken physics in high school?

Yeah, I'm a high school senior and I'm taking physics now.

I'm not an engineering major, so I wouldn't know, but I don't think my college req. physics for engineering. Just a lot of math and stuff.

It may be a better idea to take AP chemistry. That way you can test out of a course and possibly some labs too. That will save you alot of time your freshman year to do other things. Highschool physics might give you a good background for college physics, but you will still have to take Physics in college.

I took AP Chemistry in highschool and I got out of two semesters worth of class and two 3 hour/week labs which equalled 8 credits. It allowed me to take more elective classes freshman year and allowed me to have a lighter workload junior and senior years when the classes began to have heavier workloads.

I've done Physics since I was 12yrs old. I am in 6th form college the equivalent of the last 2 years of HS. For most of the Engineering courses of Computer Science here you are required to have Physics or Maths as a required subject that you have completed at A-level standard.

Two years of physics in highschool and another 3 semesters of it in college. Glad I took it in high school since that was one class that a lot of people struggled with at college and I didn't have to study that hard to get a good grade. The course was taught to a level between the "had physics in high school"/"didn't have physics in high school" groups. They did offer a physics prep course to help people catch up before taking physics 101.

Edit: I can't think of any engineering disciplines at Penn State that did not require at least three physics courses (not including labs). Any materials based engineering (chem eng, me, ce, comp eng, ee) are going to be physics heavy.

I also had it in HS. I thought is pretty interesting then.

Then I had a year of it in college, that was alot tougher.

I took physics in HS, took the Physics-B AP exam and scored a 4, which was useless to me 'cause my college required a 5 on the Physics-C exam in order to get any credit. :( But depending on the college, you can get credit for the Physics-B and/or for lower scores too.

I did, but the real question is--How many of you have taken physics in grad school? ;)

Question, what the heck is AP physics I, keep hearing about it but I have no idea what it is...
Is it mechanics? E&M? Optics? Intro to Modern Physics (quantum mech and special theory of relativity)?

Yes, I am taking physics in CEGEP (only Quebec uses this system) I passed all the courses above + I'm taking physics for engineers (it's an intro class)
Yes, all are required to apply to electrical engineering for university.

I don't know how anything works up in Canada, but in the US we have AP (Advanced Placement) courses in high school which are supposed to be college-level. At the end of the year there are national AP tests. Depending on your score and university you apply to, you can get college credit for them. I think there were 2 AP tests for Physics - one for Mechanics, the other for Emag.

i took honors and AP physics in high school. i'm not an engineering major, but as a CIS networking major @ Purdue, i did have to take 2 physics courses as requirements.

Yeah, I took Physics in Grades 11 and 12, and also for two semesters in university.
It was a prereq for medicine...

Funny how I don't use it anymore!

physics in my school was optional. it didn't help when it came to college level physics (211-213 series)

I'm kinda curious about how Canadian and US schools compare. At what level do US students learn math

1) about stuff like eigenvectors and complex numbers, fourrier transform and discrete cosine transform, etc.

2) integration of parametric equations, Maclaurin seies, Taylor polynomials, etc.

I'm learning it in what would be 1st year college in the 'states, does that sound about right?

I would think that it would depend on where you're going and what courses you're taking.

taking a physics course in mechanics and thermodynamics right now.

it's pretty easy.

I took physics honors in high school (as at the time, my school had NO AP SCIENCE -- not even CS?!), and that was just a joke compared to some of the stuff the professor is teaching.

btw, sorry for deviating upon the topic, but i have to take calc 2 for a prereq for e&m -- is it used often in it?

usc requires engineers to take some physics, so i'm doing it now.

Have a nice day :)

Yep... hated every minute of it. My physics teacher was awesome, but I hated the generic course material.

I wish there was some way I could skip all the basic stuff and go straight to astrophysics... guess not.

i took it. it was either chem or phys for us to graduate. i took both just cuz one or the other might come in handy one day.
