who exactly is your enemy?
Both of the professors hate Bush and US foreign policy. They see our meddling in those countries as just about the worst thing possible. The Iranian wasted no time telling us this the day after the '04 election during class. We got out of our intended discussion that day just to here him complain about how stupid Americans are for reelecting Bush. 😛Originally posted by: zephyrprime

Let's assume for a second that in "our enemies" you are referring to people in the middle east - and yes, I know you are going to say 'not everyone in the ME'...I get that...
My biggest problem with the ME as a whole is the fact that they are about 1000 years behind most of the modern world in treating women as equals - and this may sound bad, but until they wake up and realize it's the year 2006, I'll continue to view them as 'lesser' cultures.

Let's take this a step further. Are they behind because they live in the ME itself or because of their religious beliefs? If the latter, does the credit for most of the advances in more modern society invalidate religion as a basis for a society?
I think, and I'm sure there is plenty of room for debate and corrections in my thoughts, that the ME is the last bastian of the world that was. One where those that are in positions of power are there because they were able to prove to be the "holiest" and not necessarily the smartest nor those that have the people's best interests in mind. The thing that scares me most, is that this is what I see a great portion of the US population striving for.

I think the worst enemies of our nation's history and traditions are the neocon pseudo-religious wingnuts currently occupying the Whitehouse. Their theme song is, Praise The Lord, And Shred The Constitution. :|

even when we were burning witches at the stake, women were allowed to move about freely and dress in whatever was fashionable
there are parts of the middle east where - again, this isn't everyone in the ME - women who are raped are killed by their own families, who for some idiotic reason feel shamed by what has happened
I'll agree that 1000 years is probably too long...but it's still in the 'hundreds of years' category behind where it should be

See the swimsuits from back than? Same restrcitions they have now.
We have alot of cults here that do things that we would be horrified to here, does that mean we are all like that?
I would say maybe 100 years behind the west in what to us is considered social development. Also, major cities in Iran are very liberal, it is mostly the rural areas that make the news.
And as we can see from our own backyard...the rural areas are always behind the times 😉
