How many of you have actually tried to learn about

I tried going without showering and using my bare left hand to wipe my ass but I found it to be disgusting.

Know thyself, know thy enemy, never know defeat.

This is exactly why we are in the f*cked up situation we are today. The Bush administration didn't "know thy enemy" and are being bitten in the arse because of it.

basically we are all the same, replace muslim with christian, buddhist with catholic, black with white, gay with straight. Once people realize that, it all gets a little more simple, and people become more empathetic and less ethnocentric.
And you could even swap out radical muslim with radical christian, both have the same mentality, one will suicide bomb for his/her cause and the other will take out abortion clinics for theirs. Obviously killing in the name of god is the biggest hypocrisy of them all.

One benefit of being at WashU - we have a very diverse student body, especially in the engineering grad school. I know PhD students from Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan. We also have professors in our department from Iraq and Iran. The perspectives from the students who have just come over and from the professors who have been here for about 30 years each are markedly different.

Lived and worked in the ME for over 8 years, lived in Europe for about the same time. Traveled the world over. Pick who you call want to call 'enemies'.

People are the same all over.

That's interesting. How so?

The only basic tenent that people universally share is the desire to be safe and happy. Culture often defines radically different ways to acheive that. Even kamakazies and suicide bombers are just seeking the ultimate happiness and safety; although it seems strange and a threat to other cultures' safety and happiness.

Both of the professors hate Bush and US foreign policy. They see our meddling in those countries as just about the worst thing possible. The Iranian wasted no time telling us this the day after the '04 election during class. We got out of our intended discussion that day just to here him complain about how stupid Americans are for reelecting Bush. 😛

The students are generally much more positive about our actions. The guy from Afghanistan plays on the school's club soccer team with me. He said he was the first person to come to the US from his city in about 25 years and had to deal with a lot of stiff competition to get here.

I'll say more later... Gotta run!

Let's assume for a second that in "our enemies" you are referring to people in the middle east - and yes, I know you are going to say 'not everyone in the ME'...I get that...

My biggest problem with the ME as a whole is the fact that they are about 1000 years behind most of the modern world in treating women as equals - and this may sound bad, but until they wake up and realize it's the year 2006, I'll continue to view them as 'lesser' cultures.

Stupid! Of course your hand is disgusting. You always should wash it before using it to wipe. The stuff you handle during the day is filthy and could cause your behind to catch a terrible disease.

And besides, I don't think I believe you. With the size of your ass wouldn't you need a ten foot long left arm? 😀

Firstly, thank you for making sure your clear to say people of the middle east. For example Saudi Arabia, they say women cant drive? and moreover they say becuase of religion? This is totally incorrect, firstly they didnt have cars back then, but they did have camels and horses. Now let me ask you this, were women not allowed to ride horses and camel? Absolutely not, of course they were allowed. SO i just want to make sure that you guyz understand what he just said, people in the Middle East, not necessarily Muslims or with an Islamic view. Once again the middle east is in the situation they are in, becuase of Dictators runnign the show, and inturn they put roughly less than 10 percent of the Muslims in their situation.

FYI Less than 20% of muslims world wide are actual Arab, MOST Muslims are not arab.

Also just for clearification, Islam is actually great to women. If it wasnt then why would the fasting growing religion (i.e. Islam) have for every 1 man that becomes a Muslim, 7 women.

Yes For every 1 man that comes to Islam, there are 7! women

I think the worst enemies of our nation's history and traditions are the neocon pseudo-religious wingnuts currently occupying the Whitehouse. Their theme song is, Praise The Lord, And Shred The Constitution. :|

Let's take this a step further. Are they behind because they live in the ME itself or because of their religious beliefs? If the latter, does the credit for most of the advances in more modern society invalidate religion as a basis for a society?

I think, and I'm sure there is plenty of room for debate and corrections in my thoughts, that the ME is the last bastian of the world that was. One where those that are in positions of power are there because they were able to prove to be the "holiest" and not necessarily the smartest nor those that have the people's best interests in mind. The thing that scares me most, is that this is what I see a great portion of the US population striving for.

Religion is a nice protection against all that is wrong in the world. The problem is when religous people in power make the world worse and worse therefore strenghtening there own position when more and more people turn to religion out of fear.

"1000 years" Is a very long time. I think you need to go back to the drawing board and find a new number. BTW women in the US could freely vote in the 20's and black people in the late 60's. How is Iran 1000 years behind us when only 100 years ago black people were 3/4's of a man in the US, and had worse rights than Women now have in the MidEast? Maybe they are 50-100 years in some places but not 1000....
Even about 300 years ago we were "Burning Witches" in Salem.......Just something to consider about these "Lesser Cultures"

Yeah sure, worse than Hitler, Tojo, give me a break

even when we were burning witches at the stake, women were allowed to move about freely and dress in whatever was fashionable

there are parts of the middle east where - again, this isn't everyone in the ME - women who are raped are killed by their own families, who for some idiotic reason feel shamed by what has happened

I'll agree that 1000 years is probably too long...but it's still in the 'hundreds of years' category behind where it should be

See the swimsuits from back than? Same restrcitions they have now.

We have alot of cults here that do things that we would be horrified to here, does that mean we are all like that?

I would say maybe 100 years behind the west in what to us is considered social development. Also, major cities in Iran are very liberal, it is mostly the rural areas that make the news.

And as we can see from our own backyard...the rural areas are always behind the times 😉

My thoughts exaclty. But when ever you loose touch with how "far" or "behind" another palce is just think of the US and they last group that has struggled in the US - Black People" We can never be that far ahead - Slavery was less than 200 years ago.

Its honestly not that important to me. I would simply like the United States to stop messing with them, then their cultural differences become unimportant. Right now, its easy for Al Queda or whoever to rally their fellow Muslims against the US because we keep fvcking with them. If we were to leave them alone, Al Queda's support would diminish.
