How many of you guys with Win2000 has the CD-ROM transferring in PIO mode?

I can't get it to do DMA. I don't remember whether it transfered in DMA when I had Win98 or not. It's a Creative Labs 48x. DMA is enable in the bios, so I guess my CD-ROM just isn't capable.

My Plextor 12/10/32A only does PIO4 in Win2K. Changing to DMA in my BIOS causes a hard freeze. However, when I use WinME, the DMA box is checked. Go figure...

In Win2K, I get "CPU errors" when ripping CDs above 8x (w/Audiocatalyst). In WinME, I can rip 24x without any problems. Both OS's burn just fine at 12x.

I wish I knew how to get around this in WIn2K. Anyone done this?

Go to Device manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, Enable DMA if Available for transfer mode, Auto Detection, for all devices. Win2K will use DMA if applicable.

I've enabled DMA in the BIOS, enabled DMA if possible on the appropriate channel, but it still won't enable DMA on the CD-ROM. I read that you could try disabling DMA on the IDE channel with the CD-ROM in the BIOS and that that will sometimes fix it, but not in my case. Anyone else with ideas?

Not me. :D

My CDROM and CDRW connect to BX IDE ports and both of them run at DMA mode. This makes a difference of heaven and hell to me when installing games/applications, CD ripping and burning.

BTW, W2K defaults to PIO mode for CDROM/CDRW devices.

Does anyone know how to force Windows 2000 into using DMA mode for CDROM/DVD devices that DO support DMA transfers? My Plextor 12/10/32A certainly does support DMA and my DVD drive does too. In fact, without DMA enabled, DVD playback in Windows 2000 is choppy. In Windows 98 and Me I can enable DMA for the DVD drive which makes the DVD movie playback super smooth. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I read that, atleast with VIA chipsets, disabling DMA will sometimes cause the OS to select DMA mode. It didn't happen in my case, but you might give it a try if that's what you're running.

I cant imagine whats going on with your setup. After install did you install Via's 4-1 driver and enable DMA? My earlier post should clear up your problem with DMA.

I installed the latest 4in1 drivers. I enabled DMA if possible on both ide channels. My hard drive is in DMA mode, but my CD-ROM still isn't. Even though it did work in DMA mode with Win98(I think). I suppose it's just a lost cause for now. :(

One question... When I install Via 4in1 drivers on my Win2k, it only install AGP 4x/133 drivers. Is this true for everyone here who has Via chipsets? Thanks.

It was for me and I think its due to the board supporting 4x which is backwardsd compatible.

I mean, are all the other files in the 4in1, busmaster... unnecessary for Win2k on the Via chipsets? Appreciate the info if anyone else has the same experience. Or else they should call it 1in1 driver for Win2k...
