How many of you find this hard to believe?

I'd already seen this plan...and I think that Microsoft is crazy!

They aren't including backup or shadow copy on most home versions. That's SO sad! Microsoft should be ENCOURAGING people to backup their computers, not discouraging it.

Support, with so many versions, is going to be much tougher to handle. I already have a hard time with the differences between XP Home and Professional. Imagine trying to remember the features and menus of seven different versions of Windows?

Linux is still much cheaper than Windows any way you look at it (not considering piracy). I am still learning Ubuntu.......

Anybody know what "Windows Activation Services" is? It's in the new Home versions of Vista, but not in the Pro versions of Vista.

So, what's going to be the version to get? After using both Home and Pro versions of XP extensively, I couldn't personally live without Pro and it's ability to act as a remote desktop server, set detailed permissions, back up data, EFS support etc.

But I don't get a clear idea of what I would want out of Vista from that winsupersite.com page. Maybe Ultimate Edition or Small Business Edition. What do you guys think?

Once the game manufactures port games for Linux..Windows will go down in flames.

Once is the key phrase there. We have been waiting for roughly 8 years with little result.

Guess it depends upon the price structuring on all the different offerings. I'll reserve judgement until pricing is revealed although this does hold some room for hope.

I like Linux, use it daily. Also tried Free BSD and that's nice. I also use Windows daily and as far as gaiming and other consumer apps., Linux will never catch up as long as Windows and MS control the mainstream O/S on systems. As much as we may like it and others around the globe, Windows still controls the market when it comes to consumer level purchases either with a system or stand alone copies. For the most part, this is a windows world yet and the vast majority of the everyday joe email, surf and game crowd which dominates will never switch unless/until something vastly better comes out because they will never take the time to learn Linux.

Seven versions of Vista? yeah right. thats an enthusiast site for you.

Try 47 different versions.
This doesnt exactly mean there are 47 versions of Vista.

First off "Vista" and "Longhorn Server" will be seperate products. Windows Vista is the next MS Client OS due to be released this year. Longhorn Server (Longhorn is the code name, they havent announced the release name yet) wont be due out until '07.

They list OEM vs. Retail as seperate "versions"; while they techincally have differant licensing requirements they are the exact same featureset so they are the exact same product.

Microsoft still hasnt released any information about their Server product versions.

This guy just decoded the SKUs from the product key; it doesnt by any means mean this list anything like the final product.

This is still the most accurate list out there:

Most of these versions exist for XP now.

Of course all of this is still subject to change.

I really dont see why people are complaining about the differant SKUs; it's kind of like complaining that Pepsi has too many flavors of soda...

This gives people more options and I think that's better than the current situation. Right now you have all these people who end up buying XP Pro because they need one feature that XP Home doesnt support. The Vista ala cart approch would seem to be more reasonable for a lot of consumers.

Only people bitching are a bunch of *nix zealots who won't be buying it anyway. Screw em.

1. No Consumer options = MS getting bitched at.
2. Consumer Options = MS getting bitched at.

Considering they can't escape from getting bitched at I'm glad they chose #2 myself.
