How many of you buy new cable modems...

I have some RCA cable modem provided from Time Warner. I've seen alot of threads about people buying motorola stuff, saying it somehow works better. I always thought you had to stick to what the ISP provides.

I depends on the ISP. Some require that you buy your own modem. Some will rent you one (at an additional monthly fee) if you don't want to buy one.. Some include rental as a mandatory part of the monthly fee.

He's right. 🙂 In Central NY you must use the one that they provide according to their website.

I am in West TX, and Suddenlink (was Cox) allows us to use a wide variety of modems. I have a Motorola SB5100 in the closet and a Linksys BEFCMU10 v4 in use right now.

Thanks for the faq link. It looks like I can get my own. 😀

However in reality unless something is wrong with one particular unit, it does not matter which brand of cable Modem you use.

lol!

Buy a new cable modem? I'm still using the one the cable company gave me 8 years ago and still routinely get 10-20 Mbs.

In my experience, if you own your own modem, then eventually you need to have a SPARE modem. When your Internet connection EVENTUALLY fails (or starts misbehaving), your cable company will likely suspect your modem. You will have to change out the modem to show that it's NOT the modem.

I have a Motorola modem hooked up, a spare Motorola modem in the closet (that I was using until I switched my home to a Business account), and a third Linksys modem also in the closet (that I replaced when my Cable connection started mis-behaving a couple of years ago).

Yap, I have a spare Cable Modem and a DSL one.

Things go bad some times, or and you need to rule out a piece of hardware when a Network does not work well and you are Not sure what part is the culprit.

In matter of fact, many of us are capable to solve issues fast because we have closets full of "spares". (Why should not I have spares? My wife has closets full of spare clothing).

However as I said in my previous post, there is No reason to buy a new modem if your mode is functioning correctly, Cable and DSL Modems are not graphic cards, if they work they work, you would not get better Internet because you bought a new one or changed the Brand.
