how many more cars could lexus sell if they weren't the fugliest things on the road?

it all started with that UFO they call the 'rx300' goddamn that thing is ugly. it happens to sell really well even so. then came the redesign of the es300. it went from a subdued, yet attractive car, to some alien sea cucumber with bug eyes. the ls went from a stately mercedes copy to, well, a really bad mercedes copy. and then there is the sc. quite possibly the fugliest thing on the road today. tell me, why are those extra two seats even there? and what is up with the monolithic chrome wheels? and why is it that only 7 footers can see out the side due to the height of the beltline? are they trying to make a convertible for people who don't want to be in a convertible?

The inside is really really nice. Very comfortable, lots of features. And most of them look pretty good, IMO.

i guess you never drove one because they are some of the most quiet and comfortable cars to drive in. I had a is300 and it was just an amazing car. The looks are much better then most automobiles out there.

The best by far is the IS300, and the new 2006 IS is definately a sexy car.

i agree most lexii are ugly, but i dont think the rx330 is that bad. actually, i think the sheet metal is very good. but they made the mistake that kills the look of any car: they didnt push the wheels to the corners. so it looks all floaty and unstable. im tellin ya, if they push the wheels outward by about 2 inches, it would look 10x better.

The only Lexus I can complain about is the new ES300. Not that its ugly or anything but the fact that the exterior looks too much like a Camry. Interior wise, the Camry doesn't come close. And yes I do realize Lexus=Toyota but Lexus needs to set themselves apart and having similiar looking cars is taking a step backwards.

I own a '98 GS400 and it is a beauty. And the new GS430s...DROOL!

beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You many think they don't look that good, but many many others do. I like acuras.

Lexus sells a lot of cars for a luxury brand:

IS300 was very popular when it first came out. It just got boring after a few years being the same. The redesign is very nice and will sell

ES330 is a hit. One of the most popular sedans is the Camry. The ES330 is based off of the Camry, but it is almost 100% different inside and out. It uses the same drivetrain but the interior is top-notch (real wood) and the exterior is different.

RX330 is a beautiful car. Have you ever driven one? It is based off of the Highlander which is another high volume selling car. The Highlander is a wonderful car with terrific gas mileage for an SUV with that power. The RX330 has a beautiful interior and a good looking exterior.

GX470 is for all the off-road loving people who want luxury. You will not find a car like this that has this much luxury. This is Land Rover territory and I think the GX470 has it beat.

LS430 is exactly what it is. Old man's rich car. When the Q45 came out it was praised by almost every magazine. Lexus sold more because the Lexus is more for the older crowd. Older people have more money. The interior of the Lexus LS430 is AMAZING.

SC430 is boring on the outside but it has great specs and a beautiful interior. Girls love this car. Doctors who want to impress girls love this car.

Did I miss anything?

actually the highlander is based off the rx330, which is known as the toyota harrier in much of the world. and i think they're fugly. especially with green tinted glass in the back that every single one of them comes with. and with the forward leaning liftgate that a) looks stupid (especially with the wing on it, wtf) b) cuts into your cargo space (not that anyone ever put anything besides a gucci bag in their UFO/station wagon)

i like how a lot of people in this thread think they're suggesting a counter point when they're not. i didn't say anything about the interiors, how they drive (like yachts on wheels), or anything but the exterior. and lexus seriously makes the fugliest exterior designs of any car make, except maybe mitsubishi (the new eclipse is horriffic).

and acuras look better than lexii. so do infinitis (well.. the q looks like a pinto bean). so do mercs. and bmw (except the 7 series... and the z3, ert, z4... wtf was bangle smoking?). and caddies (if you don't like how new caddies look you are a woman, plain and simple). but the sc430 is the fugliest thing on the road today. they aren't that nice looking with the top down and they are absolutely awful with the top up. they're sports cars for people who don't want sports cars.

i agree with the OP. Lexus blows as far design goes. They may be comfortable and all but looks matter to me, so Lexus = IMO.
