How many miles per gallon did the 1970's Cadillacs get?

I realize that these things are massive and some of the worst guzzlers on the road, but how feasible is it for a 17 year old with an $8.00/hr job to use it as nearly a daily driver, I mean, do they REALLY cost A LOT more to run?

They only way to make sure you don't break the bank on gas getting to work with one of these is if your work is within biking distance. And if that's the case...

How much driving do you want to do? If you olny drive 100 miles a month, then even at 10 miles/gallon, you wont spend more than about $25/month on gas.

With a car that old, the cost of GAS is the least of your worries.

Heck, even when those things were new they weren't reliable.

I believe the worst of the lot was the Olds Toranado with the 500ci.

8mi./gal.....same as a DC-8

I had a 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 428 ci, I imagine a Caddy would get about the same mileage, which was around 12 mpg.

On second thought, the big cars around 1973-1980 had lots more pollution controls, which hurt mileage some. But the motors got smaller too so it probably equaled out.

Gas != cheap.

If I were making that kind of money I'd pick up a cheap ford focus. They're not very nice cars IMO but they don't guzzle gas and they're cheap to maintain if you're us/canada.

The Toronado never had a 500ci engine... the largest engine Olds made was the 455, and the largest engine in the Toronado was the 425 I believe.

How about some intelligent opinions?

Ok, is this a daily driver? Is this a project car for cruising? Is it both?

Mileage isn't the greatest usually in the 12 mpg city range.

The larger cars came with 27 gallon tanks.

These cars were downsized in 1977, like the other fullsize GMs.

I drive a fullsize 1987 Crown Vic that manages, on a good day, 18 MPG, but usually 15 or so.

But if you enjoy big cars, like me, then mileage is not important.

My parents had a 1970 Fleetwood with the 500ci. That was the mother of all cars. She usually averaged 11-12 mpg in mostly city driving. They bought it ~1985 with about 20K miles on it, and probably didn't put 30K more on it during the next 13 years. I actually miss that car, er, boat.

Anyone have any ideas?

I had the 1970 with a 472 block that was re-bored to 512 with quad full bore customized carb. I filled it with 110 octane Aircraft fuel at a local airport and was clocked at 140mph.

Those were the days.

It got less than 10mpg.
