How many miles does my car have on it?

I'm going to be selling my car pretty soon, but I'm not sure how many miles it has. The Odometer only goes to the ten-thousandth place, so it either has 131,000 or 231,000 miles.

It is a 1985 Ford LTD. On one hand, I would think it had 131K on it because it is a Ford, and those aren't known for lasting that long. On the other hand, I would think it was 231K because it's 13 years old. It runs really well and I've had virtually no problems with it for the 4 years I've had it.

So it would be nice to know how many miles it has when I determine what I'm going to sell it for.

thanks for the help

um...i really don't know. I'm not good with numbers like that. The last year I had it down at school in San Diego and didn't really drive it around that much. I made the trip from San Diego to Sacramento twice, so that's about 1,000 miles right there. But that doesn't really help out much.

You can also tell a lot from the wear on the driver's seat, wear on the rubber pads on the pedals and on the area around the driver's door handle.

Well if it's a 1985, then that would be 18 years ago. I'd vote for 231k miles. If it's really 13 years old, then it'd be a 1990. Not sure what I'd vote for then.

anything 90 and earlier with over 100K on it is pretty much in the same blue-book category. It would be more dependant on the condition of the rest of the car, I assume.

Yea, where's the 13 come from?

Dood as old as your car is, the difference isn't going to be much. I just checked KBB.com for your car - in good condition with 131,000 miles, you'll get $500 from a private party. With 231,000 miles, $475. You might as well lie and say it has 931,000 miles b/c it won't make a big price difference.

Yeah, but I think he'd have a much easier time selling a car with 131k miles than a car with 231k miles.

Man that's crap, and sort of irritating to hear. I have an older friend with an early 80's Grand Marquis pushing 240k miles and the ONLY work it's hard was a torque converter replacement after his crapped out at around 80,000 miles. If you take care of your car you can drive it until it falls apart at the seams. My Marquis is pushing 140k, but it had a tranny rebuild. (Mostly my fault more than likely for letting it switch in and out of overdrive so much, but I was an ignorant kid back then.) I know Ford is notorious for certain problems, (mostly torque converter and tranny problems from what I've heard first hand), but just because it's a Ford doesn't make it some short lived POS.

Probably 231k. That is actually a very good car, my Mom had a 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis (same car as the Ford LTD) and she put almost 200k miles on the original engine and transmission with only minor repairs needed.

I could probably tell you if I drove it.

But how could you have not had an idea when you bought it? The previous owner should have been able to tell you how much he drove it. What did the odometer read when you bought it? Was the "Odometer excedes mechanical limits" box checked next to the mileage on the title/paperwork?

People may even pay more for a car that has nearly a million miles...bit of a miracle car!

Actually, it very well could have 231k on it.

I didn't realize exactly what an LTD was.

Just make a joke about the milage.. "Too many to list" or something. If the car runs and drives and your asking price is good, it will sell.
