Roger, it doesn't pop the number up under your cursor, the number is embedded in the link to your profile. You know how if you hover your mouse over a link it will tell you what complete the URL is? It's the same thing. Hold your mouse over the avatar and the link to the profile is displayed on the bottom of your browser.

IIRC, the "untouchable" 3000 were for test accounts, admin & mod accounts, and a handful of privledged users from the old forum for testing purposes.

I was around 2000 or so. Then we had the "Oh my God, we are coming up on 10000 members!" thing and away it went!

I remember coming to anandtech a long time before I started even looking at the forums, there used to be a computer outfit, sunshine computers maybe, that linked anand's motherboard reviews on their site.

Anyone remember that ? I think it was 1995 or so but it might have been a lot longer ago than that..
