How many MB of memory should I use on my system? 512 or 1 gig?

I just build a system and am wondering how many MB of memory should I put on my system.

Should I go with 512 MB of DDR or 1 Gig of DDR on my P4 1.8 OC to 2.7?

Thanks

Depends on what you do with it. Lots of memory intensive, memory guzzling apps = get 1GB. Standard surf/email/chat/game, get 512MB. :)

Get a single 512MB stick. If you find you need more later, you can buy more. I find 512MB to be perfect, but if you are doing crazy graphic editing, you might need a gig or more of memory.

It also depends on your OS. I run Win98 SE with 512 MB. I have no problems with it, but I have heard that Win98 slows a bit with more than 512 MB. OTOH, if I had apps that needed more, I would install it.

WinXP is even more bloated, so more memory would probably help.

For serious business nets, Win2K is probably the OS of choice, and it has no problem with more memory, but it still depends on what you intend to do with it. Some of my friends who are deeply into graphics have a couple of GB of RAM, and they swear it helps. I'm in no position to argue with their observations.

Since you're going to pair it with an OC'ed system, be sure to get high quality ones as a "poor" stick can limit your maximum range.

Thanks for the info.

Currently I am using Mushkin Hi level 222.

I just order the Corsair PC 3200 C2 and sell these 2 mushkin to my friend.

Since I am using Win XP, I think I'm gonna just go with 1 Gig.

Thanks for the helps

Unless you do something seriously demanding, 1 GB is probably way overkill.
Most people don't even need 512.

So unless you use Photoshop to edit HUGE files, or do 3D rendering or heavy duty CAD or something, save yourself some money and go with 512.
