Really? I spent about half an hour talking with one of the seafood distributors just about lobster. (His son and my son were racing against each other.) I specifically inquired about the price per pound for various sizes. He said there's really no difference; the 2 pound lobsters cost more per pound simply because of the much higher demand by restaurants; not because they're better.

I would assume proportionally the 2 pounder has better meat/shell ratio than the 1 pounder no?

Around here, the per pound prices are higher for larger lobsters. Smaller does tend to be better. Larger lobsters are harder to cook properly (easier to overcook if you want it done all the way through) and tend to be a little more stringy in my experience.

I like nothing larger than a quarter, but softshells if available. A 1 lb soft shell is usually $1-2/lb cheaper than the equivalent hard shell, too.

I didn't even know soft shell lobsters were available until I was served some from a restaurant in Portland, ME. I asked about it, and was told they'll only put lobster on the menu when they can get soft shells. The chef has a James Beard award, so I took the restaurant's word for it, but it has been true.

I had my sister pickup 20 lobsters for me. I placed it in the icebox to keep for now. Now I need to go pickup some NY Strip steaks.

Zero. I don't eat that bottom feeder or any shell fishes.

I eat crappie/speck or walleye that's about it and I can eat about 3 pounds.

And how many pounds could you eat in one sitting? Six pounds is record for me so far.

KENNEBUNK, Maine (AP) — A week after she gorged on bratwurst and grilled-cheese sandwiches, one of the world's top competitive eaters gobbled down 44 lobsters in 12 minutes Saturday to set a new speed-eating record.

Sonya Thomas defended her title and broke a speed-eating record for lobster in Kennebunk, Maine.

Sonya Thomas, who weighs 98 pounds, humbled her bigger male competitors as she consumed 11.3 pounds of lobster meat, breaking the old record of 9.76 pounds she set last year.

All told, the five contestants scarfed down the equivalent of 113 lobsters worth about $1,000, said organizer John Hathaway.

what would rock is if we could do an anandtech group buy for whole or tails:ninja:

Matter of fact with the way things are going maybe we should look more into group buys.... on any items?
