How many laptops are out there...

I work exclusively with Dell Latitude laptops at work and I've been kicking around the idea of getting a laptop at home, mostly to play WoW and mess around with Linux stuff on. I already have a desktop that's pretty sweet. Well at work I have the Latitude D830 with the WUXGA screen 1920x1200 native resolution and I would love to have my laptop have that so I could occasionally use it on my 24" monitor that has that native resolution too. I like the latitudes in some ways but they are really made for "business" applications and not gaming, that's why they come with the Quadtro video cards. I was just wanting to know if someone knows of another decently priced laptop lets say under a grand that has a WUXGA screen and maybe some kind of gaming card?

Native resolution on a laptop screen is meaningless if using an external display. The laptop will output whatever resolutions the external display could handle.

And Quadros can be used for gaming, they are the same exact geforce cards just with different names. Modded drivers from laptopvideo2go.com will let them work with DirectX fairly well. And gaming on a laptop, unless you're going for an 8800m GTX or GTS, you aren't going to want a resolution above 16xx or 1440 because the card will in no way shape or form be able to handle gaming at higher resolutions. Infact with an 8600m GT or HD2600 1280x800 is pretty much the best you'll get out of a laptop screen.

You need to post if you are looking for a 15.4" or 17" laptop. By mentioning the D830 I'm assuming you are looking for 15.4"

Off the top of my head there are only three 15.4" laptops with WUXGA: Dell Latitude D830, Precision M4300 and Lenovo T61p

I'm not really sure I guess 15.4

You might be right about the external monitor thing, actually have been looking around and they carry the WUXGA's on the Vostro's 1700 and Inspirons 9300 too. What I heard is that the Quadro's are made for like CAD type applications not gaming. But 8600gt wouldn't be bad I'm only running a dx9 type game so regardless I should be able to run it fairly well with that card.

The difference between the Geforce and Quadros only lie in the drivers. And carry the certification for CAD work. It's like the difference between preparing a portfolio with work made from a borrowed friends copy of Photoshop and work made with your own licesned copy of Photoshop.

If they are just rebranded or have a slightly different driver then what would a NVS 110M compare to? And resolution would matter for the fact I would like to surf the web on it occasionally, so it would utilize that 1920x1200 resolution.

I can't remember the what each geforce is in quadro off the top of my head. If it's in a 15.4" depending on the price probably an 8400m, but whether it is a GS or GT I don't know. And 1920 resolution on a 15.4" for web browsing, you're going to be squinting a lot.

The NVS 100M is a Geforce 7200 - it's crap.

I would love to have my laptop have that so I could occasionally use it on my 24" monitor that has that native resolution too

You can run any resolution on the external 24" monitor which your laptop's graphics card supports, the screen doesn't matter in that case, so just get whatever looks good to you. Something wide.

Well I work everyday with a 15.4 and 1920x1200 on my Latitude D830 so I am perfectly fine with it.

I was looking at this Alienware for sale in the FS forums, it has an ati x1400, is this decent for dx9 games like wow? The max res of it is 1280x800 which is good enough for me I'm just not sure if that card can handle what I want. That and it needs another gig of ram atleast.

I'm really really really interested in this new laptop that I've been reading on the Gateway P-6831FX 3gb ram 8800m gts 17" screen, man I'd love to have that. Hard thing is actually finding one seems most best buys are totally out of stock and they are on backorder for a few weeks. I'm still gonna go check mine today and see.

I've got the lattitued with the 1680x1050 screen and the quattro 120, it was barely playable with nwn2, wow is Ok, but not worth the cash they want for it. There's no way it would drive 1920. If you want it for wow, find a 7900 or 8800, then worry about the display.

I'm almost for sure I want that Gateway p-6831fx laptop. I stopped by best buy last night and played with it for a few minutes, they didn't have any games installed on it or else I would have tried, ran smooth, laptop looked good it was just big. Only problem was BB didn't have any in stock. I am desperately looking for one though and I will find it if I have to order it off Best Buy online and wait 2 weeks since its on backorder.
