I have a laptop here at work, brand new, and it has three dead pixels, is that enough to return it?

For me even 1 is hell. As for the OEM it's prolly xx dead within 1 inch or xx total dead, you have to call to get the exact #'s

Depends on the manufacturer. (Eg. I have a Sceptre and they say they don't usually RMA for pixels.) HP states as low as 4 green stuck sub-pixels but elsewhere says up to FIFTEEN sub-pixels. Depends on the model.

See here and here.

Hi, Czar.

If the system is brand new, then the manufacturer's immediate return policy may still be in effect. You'll have to check with the purchasing agent at work who made the buy to know whether or not the purchase contract will allow it. Many OEMs allow a consumer to return a system within 30 days for a full refund, no questions asked. The rules for getting later remedies from the OEM for pixel problems are usually considerably more stringent.

Three bad pixels is a bit much for my taste. I've got one intermittent bright pixel on a 1400 x 1050 screen on my Dell notebook. It didn't show up until after my 30 days had expired. I would have returned it if I had seen the pixel within the return time. It's only a minor annoyance, especially since it's not there most of the time, but I didn't pay just shy of $5,000 to put up with minor annoyances.

Hope you can get a satisfactory solution.

Regards,
Jim

Thanks but I´m not sure if this applies because its a 15" Laptop TFT Screen. The links you provided are for 15" and 18" HP LCD screens.

I can understand, these are all laptops for the place I work for, we got 3 laptops like that when we started buying them and the first one I set up had one bad pixel. I was quick to give that one to one of the other employes :) The one I have has none.

Funny but about 1/2 of the HP OmniBook 6000s in my office have at least one dead pixel out of the box (20 in use). The IBM ThinkPad 600 and Compaq Armada M300s have all been flawless (60+ in use).

We have a total of 7 HP Omnibooks 6000 here and I think maybe two or three of them have any dead pixels.

The general rule of thumb on dead pixels is this: At least 7 dead pixels warrants a replacement or repair. But, if you have a minimum of 3 dead pixels in a square inch, then that warrants a replacement or repair also. I have a laptop that has one blown pixel and while it pisses me off to no end, at least in died on a dark blue color so it is barely noticable. Damn cheap compaq screens! :)
