Our department's graduates are 99.9% employed by the time they graduate.

Are all these '1 interview' comments from job positions you 'networked' to get? Or, actual cold calls or applications for an ad?

And do you literally mean ONE interview - as in, no second interview, no third interview, no board review - they just hired you after talking to you once?

Any of you actually even WORKING in the IT industry?!

FWIW, my first job was the first interview - but it was just a low-paying help desk job. Second job took about 5 interviews total - the company I ended up at just having 1 interview with me. For this job search, so far I've been on 8 different 'first interviews' with no offers yet. Or even second interviews (all the positions would require it)!! Course, first job search was in Ohio in the 90s. This one is in Oregon in 2005.

What did they have to offer, you ask? 10x as much work, an asshole manager, and 20% less pay than my first offer. Fvck you, Alcatel! Who the fvck would want to live and work in Little Rock, AR, anyway..

i'm on maybe my 14th now...

i find it hard to believe that everyone here has gotten a job on their first few tries.

then again, at my old jobs, i got hired on the day i was interviewed (my first interview of them all), and after i moved on from that, i must've also gotten hired after my first subsequent interview (maybe there were 2 or 3 though, i don't even remember).

getting married and relocating does not seem to look like a positive statement for prospective employers to support the time gap in my resume.

edit: i actually did get an offer a few weeks ago... but i'm still looking elsewhere.

I haven't had a job interview in 25 years. But I guess I will have one coming up in 8 months when I retire from this job. Hopefully I will have my MCSE certification by that time.

One, two if you count the phone interview pre-screening. Although I ended up not taking the job because I wanted to get an MS instead.

The job was at Intel and I just applied through their website.

1st job (high school) - put in application, interviewed on the spot, hired on the spot
job 2 (high school) - local DJ (radio) called station owner, said "hey, there's a kid who does that high school show... he's really good, I think you should give him a shot for the weekend position" - I was standing there at the time. Called next day... hired.
job 3 (end of high school, beginning of college) - "hey, there's an opening at <pizza place I still work at> - I showed up to put in an application, "do any of you guys know this kid? " "Yeah, he's a good kid. He took my typing final for me, that's why I passed." "can you work July 4ths?" "which ones?" "okay, he's a smartass too. You're hired."

job 5 "hi, I understand you're about to graduate with a degree in mathematics and a minor in education. I've been told you're graduating at the top of your class?" "Yes, that's correct." "We'd like to offer you a position, contingent on a successful interview."
job 6, put in application, called in for interview. Had to wait til the next day before they informed me.

How do you know if you want it unless you apply and get an interview?
Interviews are at least as much to see if I want the job then to see if they want me.

-edit- what I'm really saying is I interviewed once for the jobs I wanted and countless other times for the ones I didn't (just to get experience...never a bad idea) so I'm kinda fibbing.

When I left the Air Force, I think I had 3 formal interviews. I could have had more if I'd have been willing to stay in Los Angeles or the S.F. Bay area. I got offers from all 3
The job that I took in that case did a phone interview, then flew me out for a 2nd, more formal interview.

Since then, I've probably had about 6 interviews. Twice I've told them at the end of the interview that I wasn't interested in the position. I've turned down 2 offers, and accepted one. The last one never got back to me, which didn't really break my heart.

Of the one that I accepted, I requested a 2nd interview because the offer came about 9 months after the first interview, and I wanted to make sure the situation was still what we had discussed.
