how many hours total (assuming 7-8 hours while we sleep too) do they need in a day ?

I don't know if he's bored or tired... snoring away behind me while I work.

They get bored/depressed if you are not giving them attention and no one else is around.

Our two golden don't seem to need as much as humans (7-8 hours). They do fine on 5-6 hours. Wake us up every morning at 6AM while wrestling. Soon as we open bedroom door they tell us they want to play (immediately grab wrists and pull us out to the living room and down towards the floor).

Our last golden was a larger dog and he slept all day because he had no other dogs to interact with.

What else is a dog supposed to do for the time you aren't playing with it? Rather it chew your furniture? That could be arranged... :p

I don't want him to be depressed and I'll play with him but Pomeranians (I'm dog-sitting for the week) aren't very responsive to commands nor do they play fetch. I would put him in my lap while I sit here and work a bit but he just wants to jump back to the floor... a few minutes later he'll scratch at me ... and I know he doesn't want to piss/poop. Ultimately he always wants to be outside, but I can't have that happen all the time (and it's about 20F out there right now). So in the end, I'm just trying to determine if his afternoon sleep time is because he needs it or because he's bored.

I have 2 australian sheperds. They're great. All they do is play. I used to have a beagle, but all she did was sleep and eat(and man did she eat!).
