Just wondering how many HD's the typical PS can handle, I'm looking at setting up a raid 5 system with probably 8 drives, current power supply is 460 watts, wondering if that is enough? Or is it somehow possibal to add a second PS just for the HD's?

Thanks

Why would you want 8 hard drives? Will your computer be serving websites to millions of people?

I would say buy the best PSU that you can afford. Antec and Enermax are known to be quite good. You would also need a HUGE case and an insanely expensive IDE/SATA/SCSI RAID controller. It is definately possible tho.

You will save money and not lose any performance by going with 4 drives that are twice as large. It would be a much more managable setup as well.

I plan on a raid 5 setup.. and I'd lose less space % on the more drives i have then.

I have lian-li pc70 case.. so i have room for some drives. Looking at 3ware cards seems on ebay can get 8 port card for ~ 300 bucks or so.. so thats not to bad.. planning on useing it as sort of a home theater server thingy.. load all my cds into it.. and also rip all the dvd's i have into it for instant acs.. hence the need for lots of HD space...

A 460 watt PSU should be fine. As long as it is a quality PSU (ie Antec, Enermax, etc) and not some generic POS. My file server box has 4 hard drives with an Antec 380 watt PSU and never a hiccup.

Our file servers at work have 12 10k RPM SCSI drives in them and are designed to work off a single 480W PSU. You'll be fine with 8 IDE drives.

I currently have 6 Hard drives hooked up along with 2 burners and 7 case fans with room to spare.
All on a 450w PC Power Cooling power supply.
