How many garage doors should I put in a 2 car garage?

    1 or 2?

Just wondering what the consensus is on this. I'm planning a remodel and have a 20x20 carport. I'm going to put up 2 new walls and make a 24x20 garage (24 long and 20 wide).

Anyone got pros and cons about 1 door versus 2?

    Thanks.

    2 doors pro:
    1 garage door opener
cheaper initial cost in hardware and installation
more "wiggle" room to get in or out
car can be parked in the middle for many uses (maintenance or just large vehicles)

    1 door pro:
    i think it looks better
can be opened 1 at a time

I am not sure if you did it on purpose but do you have your list swapped?

Most 16' doors are not good, they will eventually sag.
Is this a remodel with a permit?
If so, you will need shear walls at the front corners. The alternate shear wall in the UBC is ~20" finished.
    240" - 40" = 200" = 16' 8"
So there is the dilemma. Two 8' doors are a PITA as well if you have a full sized truck. You have to fold mirrors to go in or out.

I had that same dilemma a couple years ago. Mine was 24' wide and I chose the 2 door option. The only major problem I have with it is visibility when exiting. I back in to the garage, but even then, when I exit, my car is a few feet into the alley before I can see if anyone is coming. May not be an issue in your case.

1 prefer 1 door. More flexibility on space.

Six, two on each of three sides. Will allow you to open up to let in air and light.

Go for the funky 70s look, and use a bead curtain. It's easy to install, and you can make dramatic exits.

I'd say one door if possible. 9' doors are alright, 8' is pretty restrictive for any sort of larger vehicles.

Because you're too poor to have a garage.

Go for one door. It looks better, only one opener to worry about.

I would think that sagging is a non-issue if you have it done properly. I just perused mine and it's a 16' engineered joist across the span, at least a foot high (not sure how thick the joist is). I can't see it ever sagging.

you also have to take into consideration, with 2 doors there's going to have to be a small wall between them at the entrance. probably about a foot wide.

i have a 24 x 24 garage and an 18' door. there is no sagging as it's reinforced due to it's size.

That is required by code now just about everywhere for the larger garage door openings.

20 year old 16 foot door here only started sagging when my sister drove in to it.... I prefer the single because I can pull a car in the middle to work on if I need to.

2 separate garage doors look better, but harder to get in/out of than one big garage door.
