How many fluid ounces to a shot?

I hear anywhere from 1 fl. oz to 2 fl oz.

reference one:1 fl oz.
reference two:1.5 fl oz

Shot glasses varie considerably in size as well.

One of the round shot glasses here holds exactly one ounce when its filled high enough to be handled without spilling.

Another round one I have holds 1.25 oz filled to the same level.
Square shot glass here holds 2 full ounces.

If the bar your at is cheap, they will give you 1 oz. If not, they usually go with 1.5 oz.

The airplain style shot bottles will always be 50ml. I work at a liquor store and there's nothing bigger, or smaller. But since it's that crappy non US system of measuring I couldn't tell you ounce wise what it comes up to 🙂

50ml is about 1.7 ounces.

In my book, a shot is one ounce if you're shooting it, 2 if you're mixing it. But I like my mixed drinks fairly strong

if you were to bartend by the book per-sey....
All drinks are supposed to be controlled by volume to make them have the same amount of alcohol.

1shot of whisky = 1 beer = 1 glass of wine...etc

so shots of different liquors are going to have different volumes... I dont think there is one true shot volume.

It seems to wander between 1 and 2 oz. I've got a jigger that is 1 oz. My bar butler doses them at 1.5 oz.

Of course I rarely measure shots anyway 😀

This question was on jeopardy the other night.

A JIGGER is supposed to be 1.5 ounces. A SHOT is 2/3 of a jigger, or 1 ounce.
