How many fins does your P4 Retail HS have?

I've seen two types. One that has 17 fins including the two outside ones and is a little taller, and a somewhat shorter version with 23 total fins. What did yours come with? I'm interested in the newer CPU's @ the higher clock speeds mostly.

Thanks! All the ones I have seen are the 17 fins. Got this one odd one with 23 <shrug>. Alpha 8942 is ordered anyway. I'll use it for a little while.

I'll try it out and see. I have some other fans around as well, but they would all be too noisy. If its too Hot, I'll grab a M1A.

I'm running a 2.66 OCed to 3.0Ghz with an 8942 + L1A combo. The L1A is plenty of fan in my setup, I get max Prime95 load temps around 46-47°C.

BTW - My stock 2.66 HSF has 17 fins on it but there's at least 2-3 other HSF configurations of P4 NW HSFs. I was looking through a big box of pulled P4 HSFs the other day and saw at least three unique heatsink types, as well as 2-3 different fan types.

Didn't look at the fan blades. I'll check it next time it's apart. I dont remember it looking any different from the 1.6A fan. I think it was 7 blades?? I do notice the 2.4B fan is set to turn ~ 200 rpm faster than the 1.6A (~2450 rpm Vs ~ 2650 rpm) at idle temps. I can hear the 2650 rpm fan more. Its a little on the noisy side for my tastes.

I have a couple of the 23 fin HS's

They use a 2-1/8" (approx) 7 blade Sanyo Denki fan

They came with 1.8's (Malaysia 10/19/2002)

I believe that those HSF units were rated for up to 2.0GHz

One of the HS's included with my 2.66 had a series of slots on the side of the base.

Most fans spin at there rated speed +/- %5 so if its only 200rpm faster it could be the same exact fan on both heatsinks.

* WARNING: Do not have a case fan blowing on a retail HSF, it is a variable speed temp sensative fan
