Howdy,

I'm starting to use SageTV to record some of my favorite TV shows and am just wondering how many episodes are usually on a DVD when you buy them. Trying to figure out what settings to use to capture the shows, how to cut out the commercials, and then how many I shoudl be able to get on one DVD.

Anyone that's done this and has suggestions feel free to let me know.

Thanks.

EDIT: hour shows

Depends on the length of the show FrankyJunior :)

Also, don't forget single-layer vs. dual-layer DVD's :)

you should be able to get 2 to 3 45min shows at a decent bit rate on a single layer disc. comercial discs are usually double this because they are dual layer. but a better way to archive your shows would be to encode them into divx at about 600mb per 45min ep this is what I do for all mine.

Yeah sorry, I meant an hour logn show (so 40-50 without commercials)...

How would I encode using DivX? Can I encode with Divx and then put them on a DVD anyway and get lots on there? I'm doing the recording with SageTV so not sure if I'd have to record with that then re-encode them to Divx somehow or what.

Really new to this but thanks for the info so far.

When DannyBoy said 12, he probably meant just AVI files, compressed with something like DivX. Not all DVD players could read a DVD like that though.

Like people said, most commercial sets have around 3-4 per disc I think.

depends on compression. sometimes they cheap out and u can just tell it looks sh*tty. also depends on whether it was filmed in hd, or film, or old tape. some old shows look like sh*t to begin with,so i guess they can get away with more compression. other very old shows are from film, like startrek the orignial series. those look crystal clear while the next generation looks sadly blurry and faded cuz it was from tape. for an hour long show, no more than 3 per disc. assuming 2 layer. thats the other thing..sometimes they use single instead of double. its a mess. i think the rule is no more than 2 hours per layer. less if you have more music tracks.

on the west wing season dvd, like season 1, comes with 4 disc, 3 are for the shows and the last one is for special features. now each dvd has 4 episdoes on it, then flip it over there 4 more on the other side, that how they got 45mins 22 episodes onto 3 dvds.
