How many DVD's do you have on your HD?

I just went through my collection, and I have 128. This will change, as I am going to give my entire library (about 800) to my kids.

In the coming weeks, all of my collection will reside on HD....actually several HD's.

Right now, 1. And I stopped buying DVDs years ago, except for a few movies here and there. I usually just download something, burn it to a rewritable, watch it, and then repeat the cycle.

That's eerie. I'm in the middle of ripping my collection, and I have the exact same number right now. :Q

How "For Dummies" of a solution are you looking for? DVDShrink + no compression is pretty easy.

I don't watch movies very often and all my video DVDs are recordings of concerts (Within Temptation, Nightwish...).

Right now, i'm ripping all my movies with dvdshrink and converting them to 1gb or 2gb avi's (depending on how long the movie is) with auto gk.

Currently I've got 48 movies ripped.

What's the point of burning that many DVDs to your hard drive? My friend has over 500, and some he has even yet to open! So let's say on average it's 20 bucks per DVD. That's $10,000 in DVDs you could have downloaded for free

Mostly its accessibility, some of it is laziness.

Whether I'm on my laptop, home dev machine, in the living room, or now at a neighbor's (we just set up a really cool 25mbit wireless link between our houses) all the movies are a few clicks away.

Leaving for trips is also made easier as I just copy a few ISOs from the file server to my laptop and its ready to go.

Then there's the whole, I just didn't want to have to get up and flip through all the DVDs when picking one. On a PC there are just better ways to find a movie than browsing the DVD stand, ex: http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/showthread.php?t=22124

And I actually watch a lot of movies. Every single one stored on the drive has been watched at least once, and most of them multiple times. What many people do with music (just turning it on for some background noise) I do with movies very often.

I rent 100 or so a year... that's $500. And I have nothing to show for it.

It would take 30 years of renting 100 movies a year to reach the $16000 he spent on 800, and you will have seen 3000 movies. You watch a movie for the enjoyment- I don't see how you can extract enjoyment just by owning the movie. Unless you watch it enough times to justify the $20 price, there just is no point.
You may not have anything to show for it, but it's more like showing off. A DVD isn't an asset like a house. What's more DVD is becoming outdated now with HD. $16000 spent on 852 x 480i movies? ACK!
