How many different programs you guys running?

On my 1.1ghz rig, I have rc5, seti and genome running. I'm thinking about cutting back because I also have a server running on this computer. I just wanted to know what sort of setup you guys are running. Should I just stick with one distributed computing program?

Is it bad to have the CPU at 100% usage constantly? I just shut down rc5, and with the other stuff running it's still at 100%, a friend said I could burn out my CPU? Is that possible? Even with sufficient cooling?

It could burn out, "even with sufficient cooling" if it's overclocked. If it does burn out, and isn't overclocked, then you're still covered by AMD or Intel's warantee or whatever.

Often it's not good to run more than one dist. computing program at the same time, due to the overhead involved with switching from one to another, i.e. the context switches involved with switching from one thread to another actually mean that most of the time, you'll get, say, 40% the performance of one, and 40% the performance of the other, meaning the aggregate output is less than 100%.

That is assuming that the two programs have the same priority.

With sufficient cooling and no fan failures, you may still burn-out your processor. Instead of lasting 10 years, it may last only 5 years. Dasm. Half the life-span. Anybody have many 5 year old CPU's still running? Except in crack racks, I don't think so.

Those figures are "best engineering judgement" type numbers. If your temperatures are below white-hot supernova (sometimes referred to Cyrix temperature) and the computer is stable, you shouldn't worry about. Keep the heatsink blown clear of dust, use a good thermal paste like Arctic Silver, and have fun.

I just run SETI myself. If you want to run alternate projects ,why not alternate them on weekly basis?
As long as your cooling is sufficient, unclogged & working I wouldn't worry about it.

BTW I have a Cel 366 @ 550MHz running SETI 24/7 for me ,& has been since 12/99 ,still running fine 🙂
