How many did you...

When you first got into trading on the market how many shares of your first comapany did you purchase

i.e. when you first bought shares how many did you buy, and what was the price?

Hint: Not many people like to put out concrete financial figures. Ask in percents, most don't mind mentioning that...

first stock trade I bought 120 shares @ 16.50 each, but only invested so much because I worked there. Yes, I know that's usually considered a bad idea, but the stock has almost doubled since then 😉

Ok you don't have to answer how much you paid, I'm thinking about getting into the market and just wondering how much of a stock people usually buy, I have been thinking of going the mutual fund way.

I have heard that its a good way to diversify without buying a bunch of different stocks and keeping up with them.

Mutual funds is a good way, especially for beginners but really a great thing for everyone. Go to morningstar.com and fool.com and read up on everything printed there 🙂

thanks, been checking out those sites lately and also reading a bunch of books from the local library.

You should try to purchase round lots. Minimum for over $5/shr stock is usually 100 shrs. My first stock purchase was 500 shrs of a company at $2.75 when I was a senior in high school.

How are they doing now if you don't mind me asking

Those were sold over a decade ago. I sold it after my freshman year in college. Sold it for around $13/shr if I remember correctly. Have been hooked ever since.

I appreciate the advice from people here on AT because it is in plain easy to understand terms, reading some of these investor books sometimes just has me all 😕 , naustica, how long did you hold on to those stocks before you sold them, just a year, thats a pretty high gain for just a year right?

my first buy was 4000 shares for .36 back in the late 90s in STRU

found it at .05 but didnt have the cash. when i did buy in it ran to almost $2 within a month and i held all the way down until the company vanished a couple of years later. thankfully i can laugh about that now.

It was about 18 months or so. Yes that was really high gain in that timespan. I was just lucky.

I got inspired to invest in stocks after reading One Up on Wall Street by the great Peter Lynch.

I've taken my share of beatings over the years. I would like to think I've learned from it but probably not.
