If it smells rank, I would advise against drinking it. My understanding is that as long as it smells ok, you should be ok.... Personally, however, if it's on or after the expiration/sell-by date, I don't touch it.

It all depends on the milk. Since you said yours smelled rank I wouldn't touch it. If it still smelled fine and it was within 2 days of expiration date I'd down it. I've thrown away milk before the expiration date because it tasted bad and smelled bad so expiration date isn't trustworthy. :p

If you are not broke, do not risk it, dump the milk and go out and get fresh product.

For me, it appears the milk in plastic containers tends to smell "funny" about 2 or 3 days before the expiration date. However, milk in regular cartons still seems fine a few days after the expiration date. Go figure.

I usually freak out if it is one minute past date. As soon as midnight hits of the due date, that milk is going down the drain.

The date on the milk carton is the "sell by" date not the "use by" date. How long it lasts depends on how often it has been taken out and used, how long it remained out, whether or not you drank from the carton, how close to the sell date it was when opened etc. There is no hard and fast rule so your nose is your best guide but you don't need to toss it just because the sell date has passed.

Exactly. If it smells, toss it. If it doesn't, then it's fine.

Smell test is the best way to determine if milk is okay. If kept cold, milk can be kept past the expiration date for at least a week. If it smells rank though I would toss it.
