how many colors are in the world

I know there are like millions of shades of every color, but how many total colors are there in the world, including all the different shades and such? Is there a set standard of all the colors in the world or does everyone make up their own name for different colors

i'm pretty sure that no one has ever counted them all up....i don't even think it could be accomplished, way too many variations of colors....

Infinite, there are even colors that we cannot conceive (sp) of on the color scale.

concievably there may be an infinite number of gradations of color, but there's certainly a maximum to humanly percievable colors. Color ranges are described as Gamuts. Typical human perception is most likely described as a very wide gamut.

Technically, humans can only perceive roughly 64,000 colors at any given time. So while over your life, you may percieve, say, 10 million colors, at any given time, you can only distinguish between 64K of them.

It sounds weird, but it's one of those neat little tricks our optical system plays on us we don't even realize.

you may be only to see a certain range, but even within that range I'd have to say there are an infinite amount. and if there isn't it would be impossible to get an exact number cause one person first of all is going to see a different amount than another. Secondly no one person would be able to count all the different coloers they can see.

The computer can offer us 32-bit color (I've heard of 48-bit color, but that's just ridiculous), so there must be need for it... that equals 4,294,967,296 discrete colors.

I suppose theres only red green and blue. Every other color you see is a variation of the three...

And yes, they are infinite, just like numbers. If you assign a number value to each of the primary colors, them add like 1 Blue, 4 Red, and 1.213453425324564564564 yellow, it will be different than adding 1.213453425324564564565 yellow.

Colors = teh numbers. Just like everything else in this analog world. :( :D

its actually 24bits, which are about 16.7 million colors, the 8bits are for alpha

d00d, i have a 3dfx card and tehy told me there are only 22bits of colorz in teh w0rld so i bought teh voodoo card.

48 bit color exists so that there is as little error through each step of the image manipulation as possible.

Technically, infinite colors exist, but the important thing to remember is that regardless of whether they exist, we simply cannot percieve them all.

Aren't there only 3 colors? Red, Yellow, and Blue? Every other color is just a combination of those 3.
Ofcourse it's been many many years since I had that art class in elementary school.
