How many colleges is it "appropriate" to apply to?

How many do people apply to usually? (this is especially for those who just did the application things...or those who are doing it now)

I seem to have 8 (give or take 1) possibilities right now (major engineering schools im considering)...is it fully viable to apply to all of these??

Like...is it really possible? 8 schools amounts to a LOT of essays and teacher recomendations...tons of stuff for guidance to fill out and so on...I've heard ppl kinda re-use essays (the good ones at least)...is this a good thing to do? And...how would you go about getting so many recommendations? Send the same ones to everyone? Or are teachers really willing to write several?

I only applied to one. But yeah, if you don't know for sure, then apply to as many as possible.

Really? Cool!!

So maybe I could get my teachers to write one or two specific ones...for the schools i really want, and kinda generic-ish for da others? hehe

And it seems all the colleges want a similar/the same essay...so I guess with minor modification, I could get all those in too...hmmm interesting

thanks skoorb :)

engineering school, eh? Applying to Cooper Union?

By all means reuse the essays, it's easier on you, it's easier on the teachers, and colleges don't read other colleges' application essays.

what you SHOULD be worrying about are all those damn application fees.

I'm applying to 1 right now, if I don't get ED, i'll apply to 2 more in december. I'm pretty happy with that number.

Just have your teachers write one recommendation and copy them. Schools don't compare applications. Same thing for essays. If the questions are the same (and a lot of them are) just reuse'em. Just make sure your paren'ts are willing to pay all the application fees. :)

True true...and if essays become a problem...I guess I have a whole freakin summer to do'em over. (with my procrastination skills, that'll turn into a whole freakin day :D...jk!)

Application fees...ooof...just looked at MIT's fee...not very friendly. And it costs extra money to send out additional test scores after the 4th one...sheesh

And all the costs of visiting colleges...good lord this really adds up!
