How many close/personal friends did your parents have when you were a kid?

I'm going to try this poll thing; I think I've made less than 5 since I joined these forums.

My parents didn't have many personal friends, and visits were rare, maybe just a few times a year, at least that I can remember.

I'm just curious what the stats are on this sort of thing.

It makes a big difference on which generation, where and what ethnic background your parents had/have.

i wonder what the correlation is with future social skills.

my parents never had guests over, they always were the guests. I never really picked up on social norms until i was much older (late middle school) and i suppose i am still a bit different, but probably no different than anyone else.

similar - it was like the world revolved around the kids, and friends weren't such a big part of their lives

My parents always had a butt-load of friends and they/we were always visiting with someone. My mom had Mahjong once a month (sometimes at our house) and my dad played poker once a month (also sometimes at our house). we were always going to someones birthday party, Bar/Bat Mitzvah or wedding.

Most my parents friends who were at my wedding (two tables-worth, 400 miles from where I grew up), I had known my entire life.

My parents were the social butterflies.

Mahjong? "Poker?"
Kinky.

(Sorry, that's just what all came to mind when I glanced at your post. :D

Mahjong: A game of Chinese origin usually played by four persons with tiles resembling dominoes and bearing various designs, which are drawn and discarded until one player wins with a hand of four combinations of three tiles each and a pair of matching tiles.

Ah, a game then. Ok. I'd never heard of it before.

when we lived in Oregon, there was one couple that my parents were really good friends with and a couple neighbors that might come over for dinner once and awhile.

my mom grew up in Jersey, though, and after we moved to the east coast, her cadre of girlfriends that she grew up with were pretty much an ever-present fixture in family life (and most of them still are... I've always thought of them as surrogate aunts).

my dad has some work friends, but that's about it.
