How many case fans is the best? 4? 6? 10?

I know that case fans should be put in the front, back, and even the side of the case. But how many is too many? Let's say the Power Supply already has 2 fans. How many more case fans could I add into the case (assuming it can take a lot of case fans) till the point of redundancy?

Got watercooling?

Seriously, though. Are you overclocking the system? What speed is it? I found older Athlon and P3 rigs to be sufficient on 1 exhaust fan, 1 intake/1 exhaust was the best setup. Kept the case temp at room temperature or just slightly above.

If you are going for serious overclocking and gaming. Then fill up with a couple intake and exhaust. Be creative and put a blowhole in the top, one side fan blowing in over the video and motherboard (or 2) and then suck air in both the front and rear mounts to create a sort of wind tunnel with air being sucked up to the top-mounted blowhole(s) and the hot air can escape that way.

4 with 1 front, 1 rear, 1 side, 1 blowhole

How big is your case?

I have 4 fans (panaflo L1A) in my cheiftec case, two intake two outtake and it cools nicely. I have not added any blowholes or anything to this case because I haven't found the need to. I am overclocking, but my temperatures are fine with the cooling that I have.

If you are overclocking you may want a blowhole like others suggested. Also if you have several hard drives that will be generating heat you may need more fans. Monitor your temperatures, and if your ambient case temp is close to room temperature, it's doubtful that adding a bunch of fans is going to cool you down any more than you already are.

Use the minimun number of case fans that will keep your temps where you want. As everyone has said, the number really varies. The more case fans you throw in, the less you will see out of each one(i.e. 10 case fans may only keep your temps a degree or 2 cooler than 4). Personally, I have an Athlon XP1700, 1 HD and an Antec Plusview 1000 case. I run 5 (1 in each place) NMB case fans. They only flow like 18cfm each. If I was using more powerful fans, I probably wouldnt use all 5.

I have infact 8 fans running in my rig. It's a dual XP 1800+ rig, so the heat is pretty intensive when you add 4 hdds and a video card that produces it's share of heat. But the thing is that you should go with whatever keeps your system and cpu tempratur down. Since you don't even have to work them hard, I'd add at least 4 to your rig with a fanbus. My fans go on around half of the capacity they could have. I tried them all on full once. Ever been on a runway when a plane takes off 😉
