i don't think that thing is quite right...it said i should be eating 2800 calories to maintain my weight.

i know there are going to be differences b/c of weight/age

but just on general, average level, how many calories does an average adult male's body burn? 300-500?

It's *fairly* accurate. It says that I *should* be eating about 2500 calories for my given weight, height, and activity level and I actually eat a smidge under that and loose weight.

You (in theory) burn a pound a fat for every 3500 calorie deficit you have. If you have a 2500 calorie metabolic need, and you only consume 2000 calories, you should technically be burning off a pound of fat every 7-8 days. The more you loose, the lower your metabolic needs get, and the slower you loose weight assuming the same level of calories are consumed.

just curious...after h.s. ended and no more sports and summer I'm just taking some classes...I put on quite a bit of weight :0.

recently, I started eating fruit for breakfast...usually banana and apple, drinking more water, eating light lunch...usually soup and more fruit, and then a balanced dinner...and if I get hungry I snack on apples. I can't imagine that I'm getting too many calories, and I'm just somewhat worried about slowing my metabolism down too much, but I'm guessing if I eat every few hours, it keeps on truckin?

I really need to start exercising again though, I know that, but I want to make sure what I"m doing isn't backwards thinking as far as dieting goes.

I'm trying to limit carbs as much as possible because I'm not exercising enough to burn them off.

once college starts, in about a month, i'll probably join some intramurals and go to the health center...

Fruit has a ton of carbs (sugar) and a lot of calories. Be careful.

EXERCISE - regular exercise -is the key. Diet by itself is useless.

And don't worry about eating "too much" fruit unles you have a blood-sugar problem - it is NOT the same as consuming refined (white sugar) calories . . . however, it is best to eat fruit by itself (not with meals).

I'll disagree there. Most people would never reach mega fat ass levels if they'd simply eat healthy portions of food and didn't devour a whole bag of potato chips in one sitting. I've managed to shed off 20 pounds, and keep off any more, by doing nothing more than eating intelligently.

I'm saying exercise isn't important. Not saying that at all. Diet alone won't promote good cardio vascular health, good bone density, and muscle development that exercise provides, but eating responsibly WILL keep the lard off.

I thought you were gonna disagree . . . :p

(still) Sounds like diet by itself is [pretty] useles.

:D

Without (regular) excercise stimulating your metabolism you have to do a LOT more work by adhering to a more rigid diet.

Unless you have a "sugar" problem (hypoglycemia/diabetes), eat ALL the fruit you want (not forgetting to exercise, as there are no "free" calories). ;)

Just a little recall about fruit/weight gain that I had read a long time ago.

A medium apple has about 100 calories. If the ONLY over eating you did was one medium apple a day, you would GAIN 10 pounds over a year :Q :Q

I'd say better to eat lots of fruit then chocolate bars, ice cream, cakes etc.

So how much do you gain if you only drink a single Coke or eat a single candy bar a day over a year? :p

Count your calories (if you must) but don't forget the difference between empty (garbage) calories and the nutritional value of that apple.

Ditto. Coke has 15 tea spoons of sugar in it. Add those calories. The nutritional content of coke is next to nothing. Maybe if you need the caffine.............

If you over eat on ANYTHING those calories are going to work against you and you are going to gain weight no matter what. But better to gain weight ono something that gives nutritional value then nothing though........

Really don't know why some people (not saying you at all) make a big deal about the sugar content in fruit. How much more of a natural thing can you eat? Just do some EXERCISE people!

You are correct, and I wasnt saying anything bad about apples...per say. :p

I really does illustrate how easy it is to start putting on weight even without even realizing how much stuff you are shoving down.

Yeah its easy to put on weight. Then its also pretty easy to get in to shape. Spend 30mins a every other day doing some bodyweight stuff at home can get you in to a pretty decent shape.

No one here quite believes how easy is to get in shape (even if you are way out of shape). :p

Exercise is a "dirty" word to most of the posters here . . . for me "diet" is disgusting.
But then I know the difference between nutritional value and empty calories. :p

As far as the "e" word goes, find something (moderately strenous - work doesn't count) to do that you LIKE and do it REGULARLY for at least 20 (continuous) minutes. (If you don't have enough "time", just stop posting here . . . we'd all like a 20 minute break).

:D

EDIT: reminds me . . . see you in 40 minutes or so . . . ;)

:)

yah, it'll be a never ending struggle for me to exercise constantly and eat healthy.

I have a problem of doing extremes, where i'll go into overactive mode and do a lot of exercise, eat healthy for 1-2 months, get tired/bored and stop cold turkey, then work very hard again just to get back to the level i was at before : (

but what i'm getting from you guys is...

fruit is better to snack on than anything elsee, but still snacking is snacking type deal. I don't understand the argument of calories though so much because if you define overeating, that'd be eating more calories than i burn off? well if my body supposedly needs around 2000 calories a day, and an apple and a banana are only around 200...well i'd be getting fewer calories than i'd require, hence "losing' weight...maybe not.

Only you can rectify this; it doesn't need to be a struggle. Find exercise you really LIKE!

Overeating is consuming more than you use so that the extra calories are stored as ugly fat.

However, if you DON'T exercise, your metabolism SLOWS further (as you age) so you need to become (more and) more EXTREME in your diet regeim.

Dieting is USELESS without exercise (more or less) as the (only) means to regulating your weight.
