First of all I just wanted to offer my condolences for those affected by acemcmac's death (which is turns out is all of us to an extent).

I admit that I got to thinking abou this due to what happened, but I hope I am not being disrespectful. If this is "too soon", I'll ask for it to be taken down.

That said, I was wondering how many AT members die and we never hear about it. I see a fairly good number of threads about friends and family dying, but it seems like we're going to be missing a lot of member deaths due to nobody coming on AT to tell us all about it.

I made several major assumptions here, but I just wanted to get a ballpark figure.
I assumed / not perfect:
-The "151,135 users registered here" figure is my size for "AT members"
-I used US death rates
-I used the data from five "How old are you" polls and averaged it
-I had to do a bit of guessing to get age ranges to line up with death rate data due to the options in the polls
-I assumed the US death rates apply to the demographic of AT

Ok, I'm sure there are several other factors I screwed up, but I thought this would be close enough for ballpark.

Something else that showed up that I don't like is the data for 65+ members. Based on poll data, about 2.4% of AT members were 65+. I wouldn't be so concerned about that figure except that due to death rate figures, that ends up being about 56% of the total deaths.

So anyway... to what I found

Member age..........Deaths per year
0-14.....................1.16
15-24...................20.75
25-44...................77.9
45-64...................44.9
65+.....................183.9
Total....................328.6

I don't think it is too soon, anything to bring attention to this tragedy is good, in my opinion.

Yes, but you have to realize that there are really only 1000 or so truly active posters.

I'dbe surprised if there were a total of 183 people on this board over 65... Mush less 183 that die every year.

a high proportion of people who post here are young males - teens, 20s, 30s... you would hope the death rate among this group is fairly low. Altho young males tend to have high death rates for motor vehicle accidents and suicides.

Me too, but I felt like I should put it in there if I was really going to go off the poll results. :p

The rates I used were
From 5- 14 the death rate per 100,000 people is 22
From 15- 24 the death rate per 100,000 people is 90.3
From 25- 44 the death rate per 100,000 people is 177.8
From 45- 64 the death rate per 100,000 people is 708
For people over 65 the death rate per 100,000 people is 5,071.40

It's an interesting thought.

I bet that most peoples' deaths would sadly go unnoticed. People would just assume that they've stopped posting.

I am sure that there are a lot of others that we don't get to hear about. Could someone make a complete list, there have been a few people that I have been wondering about like Ribbon13. Where did he ever go?

I've wondered about this too..... I imagine that for a number of reasons (socio economic, age, poll error, etc) that your figures are quite high. In fact, I would be suprised if we have more than 20 die a year. However, that is still far more than are reported.

You have a point jello (albeit a dark one) but I agree with keeleysam, we have only a few thousand truly active posters and tens of thousands of junior members and others who only come here periodically for technical help. I have no real life friends who are really active but at least three who I dragged on here to ask for technical help.

Yup. I figure 2-3000 really active posters.

And acemcmac has been around for 3 1/2 years and has 13,000 posts, which puts him in the top few percent of the really active posters.

Way more than that. Anandtech is in the top 25 of all internet forums and is one of the top 3 computer based forums.

Current Statistics as of this moment:

  • General Information
There are 151,146 users registered here
    Spacer
There are currently 500 users logged in.

I think the average login session is about 30-45 minutes. So 500-800 people probably come and go every hour during peak times and late at night I often see 100-250 people logged in. I suspect that there are 5000-7000 active users and 15,000-20,000 light users (occasional posters). The rest are people that probably registered a long time ago and never used their accounts for anything beyond 20 posts or so.

I see a lot of names that I have never seen before that have been using this site for several years and have more than 5000+ posts, I am always discovering someone new all the time.

We are currently ranked 25 and as of last year we were ranked #13.

It's pretty funny what forums are bigger than AT. :D A dutch horse forum, an erotic literature forum, a Diablo 2 forum :Q

It's amazing that such a site with broad and diverse off topic forum has fallen from 13 to 25 only to be replaced by such oddities.

I'm not aware he's posted elsewhere, but someone who knows what happened told me that he won't be posting here for awhile. He's been otherwise occupied since before 9/11.
