I want to buy a netbook and get mobile broadband and be able to get online almost anywhere. Does it work well? Who's got a good service? Any good deals? Can I cancel my home Internet and use just the mobile?

It basically reminds me of what it was like to be on an AOL connection back in 1998. Except I can go places with it. You be the judge, I guess.

In a roundabout way.
I got a Nokia 6301 from T-mobile. Great phone but weak battery. Enabling wi-fi killed it very quickly.
Eventually got rid of it. Would not try again until massive improvements are made.

I use EVDO and it isn't too bad. Our tower recently got upgraded to rev. A, which helps a bit with upload and latency.

Latency makes it pretty poor for gaming, VoIP, and stuff like that. 4G should be a lot better for these tasks, though, but that's at least a few years away.

I use 3G on AT&T every night, by tethering my cell phone to my laptop, for general web use. Traditional broadband isn't available at my house, so this is the best I've got... and I really don't think it's that bad. Won't work for gaming, VOIP, and isn't the greatest with streaming video, but I think it's decent overall.

i use verizon evdo and i have no problems. it's nice to have faster then dial up when you are on the road. i use a i760 and bluetooth tether to my mbp. works fine. if i have low battery, usb works too, and i get good speed compared to dial up.
