How mant times a day did you have to change diapers and feed kids? new borns?

So how many times a day did you have to change diapers on new borns/1 year olds/etc...?

Also how much formula did you use in a month?

Have my first on the way and trying to see what cost might be. I know this is probable not the best site to ask but i know there are some parents here.

And I also already have a costco membership. I also just upgraded to the exectutive membership as the 2% will be worth it when i have to start buying diapers, formula, clothes, etc...

I cannot say much except for best wishes and good luck for a wonderful expereince being a first time parent.

Several diapers a day. You got your poop filled ones and the ones that get loaded down with pee.

And breast is best and it is free! Except for all the food the wife puts down.

My children all eventually went to formula from breast before going to pure solid foods. I remember the pediatrician said 32 oz a day. This is when they are older though from say 10 months old to a year.

Too many,

I think 6-8 is the norm for my 8wks old, my 20 month maybe 3-4 but she's about ready for potty training.

Also how much formula did you use in a month?

I think about $80

We get all our diapers/formula/wipes from costco.

I have a 7 month old and poor memory....

Newborn, we were changing her about once every 3 hours I think.
At 7 months, she pees on average once every 4 hours, so a change happens then; also poop's 2-3 times a day, so that's a change as well.

Be prepared for a diaper change, and the second you are done.....pee or poo to take place and another change becomes necessary. I have also been the lucky recipient of being peed on while making a change more times than I care to remember. Always a good time.

Formula....You will go through 2 ounces at a time for a new born about once every 3 hours.

I think it is 24oz of furmula a day that babies go through. Now with our 7 month old, she gets 6oz in the morning with her fruit. 4 ounces at lunch with veggies, and 4-6oz at dinner with veggies and rice cereal. Since she is onto foods, she doesn't need the 24oz.

When she was about 4 months old, she was a little piggy and would down 6oz at a time without a problem. It was morning, lunch, dinner, midnight snack.

We don't get our formula from Costco (we do get the diapers there) since they don't sell the brand we use. Whatever formula the hospital puts you on, stick with it if your baby isn't fussy.

We made the switch from the Nestle Good Start (or whatever it's called) to Enfamil. My daughter was fussy, so we had her on Geantlease from Enfamil for about the first 5-6 months. Now she is on the regular Enfamil.

Whatever brand you use, go to their website and sign up for the coupons. We get $5 off coupons in the mail all the time. It comes in handy considering a canister of the stuff is $25. Also pay attention to stores with sales (target usually has good prices). Avoid your grocery store/CVS/Walgreens for the stuff. Overpriced like hell. I've found Target to be the cheapest the last couple of months.

Advice on diapers.......don't buy multiple large boxes from Costco for newborn, size 1, size 2. My daughter was growing through those in a hurry. Size 3 however......well she has been wearing those for the past 2 or 3 months.

6-8 Diapers, I use the generic wipes from sams as they are the same thing without the licensed characters on the box. As they get older you use less and less. As for food, use breast milk because it has huge advantages over just cost alone. If you must use formula, use generic as well. My pediatrician said its the same as the name brand its just yellow as opposed to white.

What formula do you buy? I was goign to get the costco brand since it is MUCH cheaper and you get more then the other.

My wife will breast feed as much as she can, the formula is backup.

My wife said 10diapers a day was the norm and I thought that was a little high. I know it might be 10 some days but not average?

Thanks

You can also pump and freeze breast milk. You don't need formula. I have 4 kids, never a drop of formula in them.

You will also have smarter, healthier kids, less likelihood of breast cancer, many other good reasons. If you haven't done the research, you owe it to yourself and your family.

Formula companies are one of the most unethical industries in the world, I'd even rate them worse than cigarette companies.

Soap box done 🙂

My kids never had formula either but those are pretty strong words.

I second the statement about Target - my wife always bought from there finding them the cheapest on diapers. It's been a few years since my kids used diapers though.

Too many to count. My daughter liked for us to change her right before bedtime and then she would turn around and do a poopy immediately afterwards. We would easily do 5-8 diapers a day though.

Feeding depends on the kid. My son would only go through a few bottles a day while my daughter constantly had to have one. We had to buy formula for our daughter because my wife couldn't keep up! Since we were using to supplement my wife, we would only go through maybe a can a month.

He drinks Enfamil, he has eating issues so we can't experiment w/ other brands. It wouldn't hurt to try the Costco brand, the worst thing that happens is (s)he doesn't drink it. Costco also takes the formula checks you get from the manufacturers, you don't have to use them at a grocery store.

Yea I agree breast is usually best but I have also seen studies that say current formula is just as good or in some cases better. So I don;t close the door on either option but lean toward breast first. That and with so many women today don;t get all the proper food, let alone the smokers/drinkers/McDonalds eaters/etc..., breast might not be the best. Of course my wife eats a LOT of vegatables and many different kinds on top of that.

But that is not a major concern for me. I just don;t want to put to much pressure on my wife. I am afraid she will not produce enough and it will hurt her. So I want to use breast first and have formula as back up for not only the kid but also my wifes sanity.

A lot.

The first few weeks they poop and pee at random, all the time. Diapers are also pretty small at that point and don't hold much, we changed as often as two hours, up to three in some cases, so 8 to 12 diapers a day. Depends on the kid though. My 11 month old is apparantly part Hulk or something, as she's almost 24 lbs and is almost as tall as her 2 year old sister, short by only three or four inches. She's wearing size 5 diapers, maybe 5 a day or so, and she burns through 48-50 ounces of formula a day, plus baby food she's now getting.

with both of my kids we would check every 2 hours to see if eh was wet or he craped. Also they would eat every 2 hours.

my daughter had acid reflux and couldnt do breast milk. she was on infamal AR it was like $20 a can and would last a day (seen it around $10 a can now and they ahve powder).

BUT nothing else would work. she was loseing weight and was having health problems.

my son was breast feed until about 3 months old. then we were able to get him on cheaper stuff. it was like $14 a can that would last 4-6 days

with diapers try them all. some brands work better with diffrent kids. my daugher we had to buy pampers ultra nothing else fit or worked very well. with my son we can get the parents choice and they work fine. if we use pampers they irratate him and he trys to take them off.

Cant answer your question directly but buy diapers and formula in bulk from sam's/cosco. Lots cheaper that way.

As alchemize mentioned there is a huge upside to boob feeding. I actually sat thru the class with the wifey and learned some interesting things. The instructor made a funny point in regards to baby puke. Formula sometimes tends to stain while breast milk does not. (.....cause I cant be messing up my $200 dollar jeans yo :roll🙂. If the wifey decides to go that route, do her a favor and buy a double pump. I'll save her so alot time plus they're so much more quieter. Sometimes the hospital will send you home with a "kit" for using a manual breast pump. In our case, I took the hoses and cups from our kit and found a Medela (sp?) double pump on ebay for cheap.

If there's anything I can reinforce it's to have the lactation consultants at the hospital work with mom & baby to "latch" onto Mom before baby gets too used to bottle feedings.

Our daughter was born 5 weeks early and was too weak at first to latch and we had to go the bottle route. She got used to instant gratification that a bottle provides and would chug it in a matter of minutes. Nursing can take 20-40 minutes a time.

She never did get the hang of it and my wife was forced to pump every 2-4 hours for 30-45 minutes a time + cleanup. For the first 5 months she was a slave to that machine. She spent almost 1/4 of the day just pumping.

Breastfeeding was just a bad deal for us all around because we found out that my wife also produced an enzyme that prevents us from freezing any excess. Once you thaw it out the milk is rancid. So from about 5 months on we did forumula only.

We go through about a can of the Sam's Club brand every 10 days or so. It's $20 a can. But she also has really bad reflux and has a thickening gel added that costs another $4 or so a day. She's also on Zantac to help out too.

We've just had a really rough time in regards to feeding. Diapers have been pretty good. The first few weeks were bad. Expect to go through 10-15 a day the first few weeks when they just pee non stop. Then it backs off to the 8 or or so a day that many people suggest.

Also great suggestions on sizes. Don't buy too many 1's & 2's. Stock up on 3's. That's the size that they will be in for quite a while.

Our baby is 3 weeks old, and i can easily say that initially be changing around 8 diapers a day! Some diapers are better than others, some are more prone to leakage, so you'll have to experiment to see what works best for you.

We fed our son some formula in the beginning, as he had a hard time latching on for breast feeding. Also, the mom wont start producing a whole lot breast milk until about 5-7 days later. Your baby will need to at least start trying to latch on in order for the breast to start producing. Breast milk is the best! especially in the first week of birth. The stuff that is produced initially (before the 5-7 days) is called colostrum and is supposed to be the best in helping your child's immune system. you need to remember that a newborn's stomach is very small, they say that it's about the size of a walnut, so he/she wont need to eat very much. From what i've been told from our birthing classes at the hospital, breast fed babies are statistically, on average 11 IQ points higher than those fed by formula. There are numerous other advantages to breast feeding as well. that's not to say that formula doesnt have it's advantages. Especially if your baby has jaundice, which formula helps fight. initially, we were supplementing the breast milk with some formula, as my wife wasnt producing a whole lot of milk. We were also feeding him occasionally at night/early mornings via bottle, as that was a lot easier on the sleep. As mentioned earlier, you can always purchase or rent a breast pump and feed breast milk via a bottle. Breast milk can keep for a long time (3-6 months ?) if frozen.

you'll have a lot of fun though. having a baby is a blessing!

Have your wife sign up over here and start hanging out the drugstore and Target threads.
Many of the women here pay nothing or next to nothing for diapers or wipes.

slick deals

Several diapers a day. Buy the big boxes of diapers and it will be cheaper. We didn't buy formula because we just breastfed (still do, she is 6 months old).

My daughter is almost 8 months now. For the past few months it seems that one box of 6 Similacs ($30 at BJs) would last about a week. So figure $120/month on formula. (Now though we also spend $ on baby food to supplement her milk habit)

A box of 208 diapers was about $40 and lasts close to 1.5 months.
