How loud is the stock p4 northwood heatsink?

And how much air does it push? Cant seem to find this info anywhere. I can't stand "loud" computers. Thanks in advance.

Mine gets pretty derned loud if I do something to stress the cpu a little when OC'd. Sort of an oscillating noise that just gets more intense. Right now I can't hear that noise. Actually backed my 1.8A back down to spec because of that noise (that and the fact that I really have absolutely ZERO need to run at 2.4GHz). Later on I may look into an Alpha or similar that would take an 80mm fan.

THanks underclocked. Im currently using an alpha8045 with my xp1600 right now. It's using a quiet pcpowercooling that I can barely hear. I just wanted To see if it would be louder or softer.

After I had installed my 1.6A and stock hs/f on my 8SRX with only the video card just to see if it booted, I kept hitting the power button on and off since it looked like nothing was happening. Then I noticed the fan on the h/s was spinning and finally stopped hitting the power button long enough to see my monitor turn on post-boot. That fan is REALLY quiet, I didn't even notice it was on until I saw it spinning. Massive change from my 60mm 47db Delta 🙂

I cant hear mine. well I do have 4 case fans and 2 other systems running right now as well, so the noise is going to be there 🙂

I just replace my Maxtor HD with Western Digital,
the WD drive is louder than the fan now, WD is sure the BEAST.

I guess since almost all Northwood retailer sell it as retail boxed
then you can try the stock HSF, if you don't likeit you can get an
Alpha and a nice - quiet 80mm fan - expenssive though

I keep hearing how loud a AMD is and how big of a change it is to go from AMD to Intel, Well a AMD processor makes 0 noise-none, Now the fan you pick can make some noise but you can build a XP2000 that runs cool and makes no noise, I build them all the time

EXACTLY. The delta screamer is not required to cool an Athlon. I have a quiet 4800 RPM fan sitting on top of my HHC-001 copper heatsink and it cools great. 🙂

I think my crystal orb is louder than the P4 hsf. The stock Intel fan is only 2700rpm, and I think it moves like 28cfm. I have 4 case fans, but I run with only one of them while just surfing and doing other non-cpu intensive things, but I still don't hear anything but that one case fan. It doesn't get much more silent than that.

You can quiet down that CORB. Remove the "TT" lid and do a 7 Volt mod to slow the RPM. You will barely hear it and it still cools fine.

Forgive my misreporting earlier in this thread. I was blaming a noise on the CPU fan when it fact it was coming from my Enermax PSU. No longer - replaced with an Antec TRUE 330 watt unit. This thing is now very quiet!!! 1.8A at 2.4GHz. 😀

DoubleL - how do you accomplish such a feat as a quiet AMD XP system???

4800 RPM fans are not quiet.
>>

Compared the the 7000 RPM screamer I just removed the 4800 RPM is non-existant. It's a matter of opinion.

Well their was nothing to it I took a Epox 8KHA+ and took a Alpha with AS3 and put a Enermax 60 mm fan turned down to 2500 RPM's blowing on the alpha, Under full load, 29C case tem and 45C CPU with a small over clock of FSB of 138, 80mm fan in the back of the case and that is without a fan in the front yet, Just getting it done, When you turn it off you have to look at the power light to know it is not running I also have a Dragon+ with a XP2000 FSB 145 that runs cooler that is about two feet from my head and it is no louder that a power supply, Have a Swifttech on it with a stock fan, Two 80mm front set to low and one 80 in the back in a Lian-Li case, You can build a good system without the noise if you want

To my ears, 4800 RPM fan is very loud. 7000 RPM is just silly. Around 3600 RPM or so and below is what I would call quiet.

I have a 80mm fan on an alpha HS. With four case fans....... Kind of loud but i treat it like I do kids, just tune them out........My Rigs 😀

sure you can get a quiet hsf for the athlon but you
have spend around $30-40 on it to have it good and quiet.

the stock it's not good specially for athlon XP - most people buy
the OEM CPU that doesn't come with the fan, and some good and cheap
with 60mm fan which runs 4800-7200RPMS is LOUD.
so to have it good and quiet the cheapest one is Volcano 7 around $27
and the best one on my opinion is Alpha that goes around $40 with
a nice Panaflo Fan.

on retail intel cpu you will have a decent temp and as Nate420 said
"The stock Intel fan is only 2700rpm" it's quiet.
since it's retail box so you can consider it free - or if you have to buy it
some people sell it at ebay for $2.99

anyway, actually it's not fair to compare the quality and loudness of Athlon and P4 HSF
because P4 Northwood use 0.13-micron technology that use lower voltage and has a cooler
environment, while Athlon XP still use 0.18-micron and the vcore is as high as 2.00 if you OC it,
even more. Probably it the new generation XP is arrived with 0.13-micron than we can
make a fair and better comparison.
