i plan on getting one this fall i think and was wondering how loud that bad boy is. i dont have too much to compare it to though. anyone own one of these and say... a 40 gig maxtor, 8.4 gig ibm , or 7200 rpm scsi 2 gig barracuda? these are teh drives that i use most these days and wonder how it compares. i could just ask over at SR, but would rather try here first.

I've not even seen one of them for sale yet, so I'm not guessing you'll get too much response here...

well...my card cooler and intake/exhaust fans drown out the 10k (I have the first one, not the II)

I would say about a little bit up to even 2x louder than your seagate.

Onvia.com has them for $500 for the 18GB drive. But, they also have the 18GB Cheetah X15 for $525. You decide ;)

part of my dilemma is that i want an insanely fast drive around <5 gigs. even the 9 gig version which is the smallest they sell, is more than enough space for me. if they sold like a 4 gig atlas 10k2 i'd love it. i want the speed and responsiveness for my main apps, and i can use my ide drives for that bulk storage. i cant imagine using one of the 18 gig drives, i dont have enough applications to fill one, and its just too damn expensive to use for storing mp3s and crap like that. complete overkill.

the x15 is the same idea though... loud, hot, and bigger than i need

Marty -

That's $500 for the Atlas 10k, not the 10k II. Makes the $525 for the X15 look even better. ;)

Do you guys really believe these graphs?

It's hard for me to believe that a simple IDE hard drive UDMA/66 or even an ATA100 could be as fast as the ultra160 SCSI hard drives. As you can see in the FrontPage application the IDE is faster than the ultra160 SCSI hard drives, how could that be possible when the ultra160 SCSI bus has more bandwidth, 10k rpm, and better seek times, etc. could be slow than an UDMA/66 that has only 7,200 RPM? I have always thought that the U2W SCSI or better yet the Ultra160 SCSI hard drive makes circles around an IDE hard drive, no matter what application, no matter what operating system. Correct me if I'm wrong. What do you think?
