Say if you started a mid career job a month ago and realize you hate it, how long would you wait until securing another job?

The last job like that I had, I kept until the company went out of business. So the answer to that is unknown.

Because of the negative perception it'll have on your resume for staying at a job for less than a year

It depends on how you explain it during the job interview. Most employers will understand if you tell them that "I was told that I was going to be working on Important Project X and hot new Technology Y, but they assigned me to Busy Work Project Z and 10 year old legacy product Q instead".

I believe if it's not a consistent thing on your resume then it shouldn't be a red flag. Of course YMMV.

As long as you don't make a habit out of it, you can explain it away in an interview.

My wife's retarded cousin has had like 6 or 7 jobs in the past 2 years. That is going to catch up with her and she won't be able to explain it away.

I give places a year to see if they grow on me. However, I tend to stay at places for a decade or more at a time, so every place grows on me.

Me too. Hynix was a horrible place to work, but the pay was decent, the insurance was awesome, and I'm not a quitter. I held on until they closed the plant.

To answer your question, it depends. But a simple answer would be 'until I had another job lined up.'

Well she can always just omit them from her applications and resume. :p

Heart would tell me to quit ASAP
Brain would tell me to find another job first so I dont end up flat out broke.

I started a job last Sept at a big bank that I ended up not liking, both because of the size/red tape as well as that I was moved to a different office than originally promised (30 minute extra commute) and not working on what I was originally promised. After 3 months I decided to find a new job because it's my career, and I could easily explain why I left to a new employer. Am now extremely happy I left.

As soon as I could find something else.

In my construction career, I walked off several jobs at the start of the first shift. "What? Fuck that...I'm outta here. Call the hall."
Others, at lunch on the first day, at the end of the first day...and yet a couple others, not until I was ROF'd a couple years later. (if the money is good enough to offset the bullshit...sometimes it's worth staying)

depends on a lot of factors: income, commute, resume presence etc.
and it depends on how much you hate it

you really need to evaluate all the pros and cons of quitting early before you can make a true assessment. there isnt some magic number you are going to learn from ATOT
