How long would you expect an in-class essay to be (60 minute class)

The prof says there is no set length, but I'm sure there is a rough estimate on how much someone should be able to write in 60 minutes.

Maybe 2 pages loose leaf (250 words/page)? Certainly no more then 3 pages?

I would say two pages is plenty if it's well written. Some of your classmates may write a book, but the quality of their writing is probably lacking.

500 words is about the minimum for any decently supported five paragraph essay, so i'd use that as a starting point. One hour is tight though.. if you're outlining before writing it perhaps you could cut it down... they really don't give you much time.

For a one hour class, probably about 2 pages front/back, college ruled, single spacing.

Exactly. The OP should not worry so much about the length of the essay as opposed to the quality. If the quality is there, the length will come.

For a University class? My lit class meets twice a week for two hours. The first hour of each class we spend writing, normally about 4-5 pages on the reading (which covers ~500 pages a week)

Length is not never as important as content. In my high school English class we would have 15 minute timed writings randomly every few weeks. I usually had one of the shortest in the class, yet I always received one of the top 5 scores.

The longer the better. Preferrably 10+ pages. Use a lot of big words too (even if they don't make sense). Using these techiques, you will definitely get higher grades.
