How long would this setup last me.

I have come to the conclusion that I cant spend the money I want on a good intel chipset.

So

I was thinking of doing the
epox 8rda+
barton 2500
2 sticks of kingston hyperx 2700

How long will that setup last overall?

Probably not, although the motherboard will need to be replaced next big upgrade, as the CPU's it supports will be phased out probably early next year, and will probably not go above 3400+ PR.
The RAM will only do a 166FSB for sure, and most new processors are heading to 200MHz FSB, so some PC3200 would be better, so you can use it in a new rig if/when you get one, or with a new 200MHz FSB processor.
As said, the motherboard will only do Athlon XP's (Bartons/T-breds) and they are rumoured to be only going up to 3400+, so you would eventually need a new motherboard.

BUT: The maximum potential of your rig should last you well into next year, maybe into 2005 with few problems. You shoudl get some PC3200 RAM though, that is what I would change. PC2700 will be not all that useful by the time you'll want to upgrade the processor.

Ohhh. Okay. No, no, that's a decent setup. It should last you a while.

You say 2 sticks of xxx PC2700... how many megs per stick? I'll assume 256.

I'd guess 2 years before a real upgrade is needed. I built a 1.4 GHz (Tbird), 256 MB PC2100, Radeon 7200, MSI KT266 system in the summer of 2000 that's still great for gaming. Of course, it's about time to upgrade it... but even by today's standards, it's fairly decent.

It really depends on what you plan to do with it. If you're playing games right when they come out everytime, it won't last more than a year. If you're not playing games or if you are, not the ones that come out right then, you'll be fine. If I were you, I'd just see how it goes.

Tell us more in detail what you're going to do with it. Also, what video card are you going to be using?

The core components you list (mobo and proc) should last a few years, I should think, before they need[/] to be upgraded. If you're gaming it is the video card that more often than not is the bottleneck and needs upgrading more often than the CPU/mobo. My 1700+ Pally runs most things I have thrown at it reasonably well, and once I upgraded my video card it was even better.
