How long would it take to learn Spanish?

MX2

I know it takes years to master any other language to the point one could be considered fluent, but how long would it take to learn enough to be able to carry conversation?

Lets say with daily study of a couple hours?

I took it for four years in high school. Granted, that wasn't exactly at a fast pace, but after the four years I was conversational.

Anywho, you'll only get good if you're surrounded by it. If you're talking to yourself, you really won't get anywhere, unfortunately. Also, writing Spanish and speaking Spanish are completely different. Doing one does not mean you can do the other.

🙂

^^My exact experiences. Unfortunately I've lost a lot of what I once knew in the few years since high school...🙁

It took a few years for me. My wife is from El Salvador and her family speaks little to no English. After a year or two of frustration from not knowing what her family was saying I started learning words here and there and eventually I could put a broken sentence together. That was a lot more than I ever learned in Spanish class.

I guess it depends on the class. My first two years or so weren't really speaking it, but learning stuff about the alphabet and sentence structure and stuff like that. My last two years, though, were mainly just learning verb types and also tons of vocab. It was a slow start, but the last two years I learned a ton. Eventually it got to the point where, at work, if one of the customers spoke Spanish I'd talk to them that way. Made them feel a lot better. 🙂

I would agree with most everyone else's assessment. I took a year of Spanish in college and did okay. The real trick is being able to talk to someone in Spanish on a regular basis. That's when everything you learn really becomes useful.

find yourself a hot hispanic/spanish boyfriend/girlfriend. done.

that's what I did 😛

well I also took it for 4 years in HS, and my best friend is spanish too. however i didn't really practice at all out of high school other than with his family every now and then.

but my now current GF is nicaraguan and her mom doesn't speak much english at all. when i'm around her family it's all in spanish. i went to nicaragua about a month ago and let me tell you, it was weird being in a place for the first time where no one knew english.

i can pick up on a lot of stuff and i can understand a lot of spanish, but i cannot speak it that well. i stillk now how to conjugate from high school days (i'm even in the national spanish honors society heh) so i really only need the vocab.

after going to nicaragua, i now want to learn spanish fluently. im not practicing more with my GF and her famliy when I'm around.

In two years, you can become fluent. Work for 45mins a day and you'll be all set. Master grammer first and increase your vocab later. I tend to find speaking spanish easier than reading but thats just me. Somehow I can conjugate verbs instantly but when I read, I need to spend time to "deconjugate" to get the right meaning.

edit: the biggest problem you'll face is finding time to actually study the language. You'll do fine the first couple of days, weeks if you have a strong will but you'll slowly but surely eventually stop...
