How long would it take for us to have a galactic empire?

Let's say we can travel to other planets and colonize them. How long would it take for us to have lots of colonies -- each with a billion or more people in them?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking about doing a comic book and I want it set in the future. In this future, we will have colonies everywhere. What time frame would be good for me to set it in?

It won't happen. In 300 years, we'll still be dependent on oil, prayin' to Jesus, and arguing over nipples.

About as long as it takes to meet another alien race and when we try to take them over we get pwned and they kill us all. :(

There already is a galactic empire. There's a civil works office on Alpha Centauri with information about it.

8000AD sounds about right :) Remember technology comes in leaps...so once we get started on things it won't be long with crazy expansion.
