How long would be a reasonable estimate from Portland, OR to Boise, ID?

Got a friend who may need to get to Boise ASAP, I'm thinking about driving him there tonight.

I'd be leaving around 11 PM PST, so it would all be dead of night driving (except the return trip, which would be early morning).

Mapquest estimates 440 miles / 6.5 hours, but 425 of those miles are on I-84 E.

My questions:

1) What is the speed limit on I-84E between Portland and Boise?
2) What would a safe speed be? (ie how heavy is the police presence, how lax are they, etc.)

Back in college, I drove from Philomath OR to Grangeville ID in about 9 hours. So, about 2 hours less drive for you on this end, and I'm not sure on the other end. On a map, it looks farther, but I remember a lot of backroad driving and towns, so will likely work out to about what you estimate, 6.5 hours.

1) Not sure.
2) Safe, probably 70. Many drive it faster, especially as you drive further east.

Good lord, Gregg. With your current work load, you're going to squeeze in a trip to Boise and hope that you have enough energy to stay awake/alert enough to drive there and back (and alone, for that matter)!? :Q Even though it's your weekend, are you going to be okay on the drive back??

Stay safe, man. :( Good luck.

Oh - questions answered:

Speed limit is 65 on Oregon interstate highways.
Law enforcement won't be much once you get out of Multnomah county, but I hear there are some towns along the way that employ police with standard issue redwoods up their asses.

you can usually cut an hour at least off of mapquest yahoo maps estimates.
i think that accounts for stops every hour or something.
its always longer than it really is

Gregg is the kind of gentleman who, if at all possible, will go out of his way to help someone who really needs something -like a several hour trip to see a dying loved one when nobody else can help them or something like that. I dunno what's going on with Gregg's friend, but it's for a good reason that Gregg's driving all over hell and back for this guy.

I dunno...

...maybe the guy's cute ;)

Actually it sounds like fun, & it would help him out. If he pays for gas I'm game.

I'll take my brother along, he's driven it several times & he can drive/keep me awake.

Good. I was going to suggest providing you company if you were going to go alone.

Why!? It's ugly. When going from PDX to Spokane, it's ugly ugly ugly. Then, when you cross over to Idaho, it suddenly gets gorgeous. It's weird!

Perhaps on the way back, it'll be kinda dark on the way there.

I've done it in 6 hours. No big deal. Cops are worst just past Gresham and into Troutdale, around Hood River (watch the hidden on-ramp near mp 59), around Pendleton, Cabbage Hill, and Baker City. Don't go faster than 75 (10 over) and you should be fine. The gorge should be beautiful right now.

Actually, 84 is not a bad drive for a while as it follows the river. The highway on the Washington side (14?) is more scenic, but you can't go as fast.
