How long would a $700 civic last in your opinion?

A friend of mine got a 1990 Si hatchback for $700. Has 330,000km on it. :Q
When my mom totalled her 91 Si she got $4k for it and it had over 270,000km..

So when I heard my friend bought a $700 civic I thought "wtf.. BS" or "POS". Every car that guy buys always seems to be some 500 dollar piece of crap that breaks down in a week. But miraculously this car seems to still be running and he hasn't had any probs. :Q

What do you think? haha

I'm not sure, but that would depend on how well the car was taken care of bythe previous owner(s).

it all depends on the previous owner(s) of the car. If one guy had it, and was easy on it, and that was all highway miles, there is no reason to beleive it will just die on him.

I would be suspicious. That's over 33K miles a year.

Those are kilometers....it's more like 200k miles. Still a lot of miles, but it's not THAT bad, especially for $700.

It all depends on how carefully it was taken care of. Anyways, if you get half a year out of it, then it wasn't a bad buy. You just don't worry about it, sell it as scrap, and get another cheap but semi-reliable car. If you don't mind driving cars that look terrible it's a cheap way to go.

could go forever.
I had a toyota that I got from a friend,he ragged it,I did for 2-3 years.Gave it to my brother,he hung it for a couple then sold it for 5 bills.

It was used 7-8yrs. when my firnd bought it.

A car will last as long as it is taken care of.

That being said, check and or replace the timing belt and water pump. Check all the maintaince parts, like Plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, etc... Then clean the injectors and change the oil.

Other than that, have fun. I got a car fir $100 once and fixed it up and sold it for $700. So price might tell you what the body is like, but if the drivetrain is in good shpe take care of it and it should last as long as you want it to.

Sounds like it should run well for a while, it is a civic afterall, what type of shape was it in? And isn't 25000 kms per year supposed to be average distance driven?

My '95 Ford has over 375K Miles on the odo and is still going strong. I change the oil every 5-7k and the plugs/wires/cap/rotor once a year and she still purrs and gets 40-45MPG on the highway.

As long as the car is in good shape, it ought to be OK. As someone else said, if it's not burning/leaking anything and it doesn't have terrible rust, it's probably got a lot left to give.

Drop a D16z6 motor into it and you can use that bad boy for another couple of years. The motor I mentioned cost roughly $400-500 dollars.
