I want to build a second rig and would prefer it to be 64bit as opposed to 32. But price and upgradability are concerns. The price differance isn't too huge at about 150.00-200.00. I know AMD will still offer at least a few more 64bit CPUs fro socket 754. It is also my understanding that AMD will port the Athlon XP onto the K8 architecture, but only give it 32bit and this should be based on socket 754. SO has AMD stated how long they will keep the 754 socket alive, even if it is just with thier 32 bit "value" processor?

the socket 754 will be around for a while IMHO...

socket A will die and socket 754 will take over as the value socket for AMD...

the 32bit processors aren't due out until 2005 so it'll be alive at least until they come out so..

Agreed, Socket 754 will remain the perfomance leader for the A64 into next year and will remain viable through 2005 as a performance socket. Both 939 and 754 will not be upgradeable performance wise past 2H 2005, when DDR2 based A64s hit the market.
