How long will wine last once opened?

Just curious as to how long a red wine will last once opened.

Usually around 5-10 minutes. They really need to use bigger bottles.

depends on how much O2 is in the bottle. Not long usually, a day at the most. If you only drank a glass's worth then you might be okay for a while longer.

Yes, with the cork back in and laying on its side.

yep

Red wine, 2-3 days max.
White wine, up to 1 week.

Wine keeps better if you remove as much oxygen as possible, via either a vacuum pump or the spray bottles that displace the ambient air in the bottle.

Hahaha, yup!

And don't modern wine bottles have twist-off caps?

Depends if you are a wine snob or not. Quite quickly there will be very subtle changes in the taste. If you are a wine snob you immediately say it is crap - regardless of its taste (and often without even giving it a chance). I on the other hand think some of the changes are good. And many old long open wines are better than the original wine flavor. Plus you might get an added bonus of extra fermentation (more alcohol in it...) I'll even keep red wine open in the fridge for years and drink it later (a huge no-no from wine snobs).

Using a cork, 2-3 days. Laying it on its side is pointless really. The reason it is done for aging is to keep the cork moist and prevent air from seeping in and making vinegar. For a couple days, it won't matter because there's already plenty of air in there already.

If you use a vacuum device or some inert gas (I've only used the first), the wine can last up to a week without too much change in the taste. It will change somewhat, but for a young wine that shouldn't matter much and may improve the flavor even.

You can also see a change in the color as the wine oxidizes. A wine that has been sitting for a few days will lose the ruby red color (if it had it originally, obviously!) and become darker and more burgundy or even slightly brownish-red. Take a whiff, too, as you can smell if it's become vinegar-like.

That's not red wine. That's red wine vinegar. Save yourself the trouble and just buy it pre-made!
