How long will an 8800 GTS 640 MB last me?

I'll probably get a 20" LCD monitor.

How long will this card last me if I game at the native res of a 20" LCD and keep settings med-high with no AA.

e6300
Asrock 4CoreDual motherboard
BFG 6800 OC
1 gig 675 Corsair XMS2 ram
500 W PSU



The 6800 came over from my other P4 system and this is my budget system. If I do get the 8800, I'll probably pair it with....

e6600
Some nice overclockable motherboard
2-4 gigs of ram


So the ultimate question is, how long until the 8800 bottlenecks a fast computer for the game settings I want? Nevermind what system I pair it with.

If youre overclocking, you likely dont need to get an E6600, just OC the E6300.

Youll be losing 200mhz tops off of your max OC, which is negligable in pretty much everything.

What do you mean lose 200mhz off the top of the max OC?

no, he's referring to the difference between how high the e6600 can overclock, and how high the e6300 can overclock. I have the e6420, which is like the e6400, but with 4mb cache. My chip is running perfectly at 3.44ghz (430fsb x 8)
you should surpass the e6600 without much trouble, but don't take my word for it as I have no experience with the e6300 and never really followed it.

Probably 3-ish years. My 7600gt just turned 1 last month and it's still going strong at med settings at 1680x1050. Ontop of that, my processor (A64 3200+ stock) sucks and yours is good so you'll be fine.

1.5 years is reasonable for a high-end card. That's about how long it takes for performance to double, and for some new games(s) to start expecting that for their sweetest eye candy to work acceptably.

My 7900GTX is about a year old now and it's still fine for everything if I don't expect 1600x1200 for all games at high. I'm waiting for the 8900 for my next upgrade, or the next ATI if they get back in the game by then.

Not to mention all the upgrades.

I think consoles will go the way of the CPU. That is, after the release of a certain generation of consoles, there will be upgrades 6 months later to get more bells and whistles.

Right now, the only bells and whistles in the other bundles is a bigger hard drive and/or wireless controller and/or extra cables, but that could all change. 6 months after the release of the next generation of consoles, they could have a newer model that has everything plus Anti-aliasing. Not AA exactly, but you get my idea.

For you? Don't know. Depends on what you think is "ideal" performance. Some people don't mind moving those sliders down, and still chug along with 6800/X800s or less.

Yeah, I usually buy a card then about 6 months later sell it and use that money toward an ugprade.

The only other card I've had longer was a GF2 MX400, but that was before I had a job and before I was on the gaming/computer scene. I had that card for at least 3 years.

Over the past four years, cards usually lasted one year for me, but I've always bought further back on the curve. The last two buys I bought the second fastest card available, albeit at a much higher price, but the cards will last me 1.5-2 years. The budget used to be $150+ for a few years, but its climbed to +300 lately. The only true high end game I play is CoH, so it depends on what games you enjoy more than anything.
I'm still playing Enemy Territory, and a 9800 would be absolutely fine for that 4+ year old game.

If you want longevity, it is the best card for a price/performance right now. That much is clear. Yes it is pricey, but you get what you pay for.
I would guess as games become more complex in their scenes in the future, it will start to show it's prowess more so and really rise above current competition at the lower resolutions like 1280x1024 (as they become even more GPU bound).

i'm the same way. i just buy whatever the new flavor of the month is. ever since the ti4600, i've gotten the newest or the refresh of cards that comes out. it's mostly sheer boredom.
