How long do you think it will take until Vista becomes the regular OS that everyone gets?

On the other hand, how long will it take for Microsoft to stop support of XP?

Well, what "everybody gets" are pre-built PCs from Dell, HP, etc. Most of those will be coming with Vista installed, except maybe those intended for business. Within six months, the vast majority of new PCs will be Vistadized.

Microsoft has already announced their support plan for XP, which promises Mainstream Support (free updates) to be until 2009 for XP Home, MCE, and Professional Editions. After that, Extended (paid) Support is to last until 2014.

I don't think Microsoft will stop support of XP anytime in the near future. Lots of businesses have just completed transitions to XP and would scream bloody murder at Microsoft if they ended support so soon after they switched and spent a bunch of money on the switch.

A year or two.

We'll be having similar arguments when Vienna is released. We'll all be saying how there is no reason to upgrade to Vienna because Vista serves them just fine. Then were will be a minority of people using XP and swearing by it. Then there will be an even smaller minority worshiping the former glory that was Win2k. Then there will be an even smaller minority of Linux users huddled around their cauldrons in the night, praying to heathen gods to strike down the Microsoft.

Actually we're praying that you guys all just keep paying MS for Windows and leave us alone. =) Linux is like that awesome, cheap, hole in the wall bar where everyone knows everyone. But once word gets out and it starts filling up with Abercrombie throwbacks it's just not any fun to be there.

MS have already stated they are extending support of XP. In my hungover state right now :) I can't rememeber but I think it was till 2014?

Only numbers I can go off for Vista adoption are looking at the stats for the half dozen websites I am responsible for, and already it averages about 49% Vista, 45% XP, 6%. Hardly representative, but still surprisingly high for Vista. I don't think its anything like that in reality as 4 of those sites are 'in some way tech or nerd related' :) However the retail one which is 250,000 hits a day still comes out at 40% Vista

I would say 2 to 3 years minimum. The Vista investment for businesses is huge, and as long as XP does the job, eye candy, etc. is not a compelling reason to change.
