How long until Seagate 500GB < $120

Now, if you can find a deal. Last week I ordered** a Maxtor 500GB drive from Outpost for $110 shipped. It is in a red/white retail box, which makes it a Seagate 7200.10 drive if what people are reporting is correct. The same drive but actually Seagate branded (with 5 year warranty) has been available for around $120 from various places. Just keep an eye on Hot Deals. Sometimes these deals only last hours.

**DHL shows drive as delivered, but not to me. Delivery signature is a name that I'm not familiar with, so I don't know where they delivered it to. Guess I'm calling Outpost again. I'm 0-2 for my last two purchases with them, though this time it isn't strictly their fault.

When the others come out with their mainstream PMR drives, Seagate will probably go down some. No reason to drop their price until then since they have the top dog for the time being.

Agreed. I got my 500GB Barracuda 7200.10 for $150 in a combo deal from Newegg quite awhile ago (sold the "free" 250GB drive to make the net price on the 500GB ~$150). I am sure they will drop big time with the introduction of a mainstream single bay 1TB drive offering (or have they already done that?). Sales and special deals will see the net price reaching $120 or less now. Just be on the lookout for them.

<3 the Seagate.

You can get Hitachi's TB drive at newegg but it is not and will not be compeitive on a $/GB basis. It's when the others come out with a competitive 500MB PMR drive and other sizes that the Seagate price will drop. Now the Seagate 750 may have come down some already but I don't watch that one either.

Do you mean how long do you have to set back your time machine for? They can be had for as little as $90 recently. Samsung and Hitachi are generally superior though and I don't mind paying a premium. PMR is not particularly relevant beyond marketing. It's the performance, features, reliability and price that counts, not how that is achieved. Sammy has utilized PMR for their desktops since last year too but Hitachi has remained competitive in the segment with LMR. Don't expect to find them in the bargain bin with Seagate or its Maxtor brand though.

Personally I don't give as much weight to performance and features as you say. While it is a factor, number one is and should always be reliability. There is no reasonable way a home use can perform a backup of a 500GB disk aside from buying two disks. So, for me, it is the fact that Seagate puts their money where their mouth is on disk reliability with the 5 year warranty. While it may be a little slower, a little hotter and/or a little louder, it has a free replacement waiting for me if it ever breaks in the next 5 years. If the other manufacturers don't want to back their product longer then a year, why would you even consider that their rated MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) is even remotely accurate if they don't care as long as it makes it 8760 hours?

Indeed, I always recommend duplicating drives. If that doesn't fit the budget, then reduce the capacity rather than risk losing your data. A five year warranty or even high MTBF ratings are nice but does nothing to safeguard your schtuff. Other manufacturers' warranties are three years for desktop drives which is good 'nuff for me as I don't use them longer anyway.

We have 500 GB SATA WD & Seagate HDDs for $130 CND here on sales...you must be able to find them for $120 USD somewhere 😉

I'm personally moving away from the seagate drives. My latest 500gb sata's are hitachi deskstars and I'm hopeful that they'll perform well. My seagate 7200.8's have become noisy and one vibrates my tower something fierce. When they were new they were silky smooth and quiet. It would be nice to see affordable storage solutions that didn't use disks at all, a nonmechanical mass storage device to replace hd's would be a welcome thing at my house.

You can find the Seagates for ~130, newegg has them for 140... I want to buy 3 drives, so it would be better to wait for the price to drop a little bit more.
I need to get rid of my old 160, 160, 200, 250, and 300 GB drives. Having 4 500GB drives in raid 5 should do a decent job...

You mean 119.99 + $7.47 shipping. It doesn't show free shipping for me - you have to enter your zip code and recalc. for shipping charge to show.

tiggerdirect has 500GB 7200.10's for $100 AR or $85 AR with software till the end of the month. But Seagate is always running rebates as their usual post-acquisition retail schtick. Before the buyout and flood of rebranded models, genuine Maxtors could be had with pretty good deals but alas I wouldn't touch these Seagate desktops with someone else's ten foot pole (unless maybe they were just squirrelled away running in a basement or sumfing).

Has tiger direct gotten any better about its rebate process? I know in the past they were horrible...

I'll be running 2 TB for media storage and a Raptor for OS and Documents

frys/outpost is flogging 500GB 16MB Maxtor branded models for $99.99 in your choice of parallel or serial flavour (each limited to one per household).
