It will turn the whole windshield into a GPS screen- right before the driver's seat.

It will have a transluscent overlay over your real life objects seen through your windsheild.

The streets will have labels with superimposed letters on the surface. Your destinations or turns will have a floating arrow over it (drawn on top of the real object through your windshield).

That would be sick. Maybe they can even improve the infrared driving so that, at night you will have red outlines of streets and all the necessary markings viewable so that it's safe enough to drive. (also detecting and highlighting other cars equipped with GPS + live calculation of their speed/location/distance from you)

We no longer have to resort to our primitive headlight-bulbs-actually-lighting-your-view-and-making-judgements-by-your-eyes method.

Just throwing some real crazy ideas. You know it's only a matter of time.

Right, you're not looking at a monitor- that's boring. The monitor itself is a see-through windsheild... that's so cool...

I am sure dogs, deers, pedestrians and bicyclists on the roads will be invisible to you, and you call it safe driving?

Are you people stupid? This is a CLEAR window, overlayed with some translucent images, not obscuring your view of hot bodies...

heck, it could even add infrared for those animals/people.

That's what I said, GPS detecting all static objects and other GPS equipped cars + live-calculation of infrared beaming in front of your car for everything else = Pretty safe driving.

What powers this overlay? I just don't trust some technologies in cars, esp moving at high speeds.

oh that would be a good idea. IF as dxkj said maybe have it help with poeple/animals that would be great. having it pick up a deer in the brush would be handy.

it shouldnt be hard to do. the problem would be cost. but heck i would love to have it.

When they invent those see-through clear glass monitors, it would be feasible. (Like the ones seen in Startrek, Minority Report or just about any future scifi movies)

This is just a geek fantasy talk, get over yourself. :p

If you're looking AT the window, then you're not really looking THROUGH the window at the same time. Your eyes can only focus on one depth at a time. So the only way for this to be safe, is if all the information you would need is displayed on the window, like the location of other objects on the street. In that case, you don't need the window to be clear since you're not really looking through it anyway.

like i said live calculation of the infrared from your car will detect any potentially dangerous objects that GPS can't pick up (people, animals, mail boxes, crap being thrown at you, etc)

The GPS I don't think I'd trust to enhance vision at night. I'd rather have built-in infrared and night-vision overlays and enhancements like the new lexus's, bmw's, mercs.

Combine that with the overlays with street names and such and that'd be nifty.

That's actually a very valid point- makes it fun since you take this idea semi-seriously for entertainment.

Maybe the overlays themselves can have an auto-focusing feature where it would look blurry if you stare right at it (the surface of the windshield 30" from you), but if you actually focus on the destination, (outside of your car) the overlay would look sharp with it?

Now I'm throwing some really crazy ideas.

right.

don't just need to have them seperate. but i seeno reason that you can't have a HUD type of thing (well besides cost).

I remember seeing huds up display (speed, gas etc) on some car my dad had like 5 years ago ro so. figured it would be in most cars by now.

Those are actually just mirror reflection to the windshield, with the gauges actualyl facing the windshield. Nothing techy here.

I thought LCDs were see through, otherwise how would they do that thing where you tear an LCD monitor apart to stick the actual LCD on an overhead projector giving you a really cheap DIY projector.

You only mentioned IR :D. I brought in a combination of IR and nightvision. BMW uses IR but Merc uses light enhancement I think. Why just be limited to one?

We might as well draw the cars together in a proximity network so that the cars can share information. You won't trust other information completely of course. For example, the car ahead of you spots a deer in the bush to the left and transmits that info to the cars within a 50 yard radius. Your car then throws up a slightly faded picture of a deer to show you it has information something is there, but don't rely on it completely. Then, once your own car confirms the information, it takes away the warning picture.

I like the way you think mister.

The windshield can also detect glaring light that it can tint itself temporarily to adjust your vision. (Just like those glasses... forgot their name). They'd have to be very sophiscated of course, since you're driving.

Even better, they can do selective area tinting where it would only tint where the sun is (calibrated to driver's POV of course).

that is going to happen with or without better technology.
