How long to test for stability?

I am overclocking a 8800gts BFG OC and wondering how long should I keep the stability test on for? I am using Ati tool to scan for artifacts .. is that sufficient to test for stability? Or is there an alternative that would be better?

... you bought an OC'd card just to OC it yourself?

that seems silly.

Sorry, I should play nice. I posted some advice below.

One hour shoud suffice, but be very careful since ATI tool might not show you any stability issues during this time, but those can appear in games. I would say that passing one hour test trouble free gives you an 80% stability. For 100% just run very intensive games for long periods of time, something like Assassins Creed, Crysis, UT2007.

My card passed the ATI tool one hour test, but crashed violently in Assassins Creed after 30 minutes of playing.

Yeah, I had the same situation with ATItool. It doesn't stress modern cards enough, in my experience. I usually use it as a preliminary "hey, am I way out of line here" test.

My favorite game for stressing the GPU is Lost Planet. It's completely GPU-limited in every possible respect, it gets me higher temps than anything else. Download the demo of that and play through both scenarios. If it runs fine, and you don't see any artifacting, you're probably stable.

Loop 3Dmark06 for an hour or two, or just play Crysis or Oblivion for an hour or so.

My factory overclocked card was actually the cheapest 8800GT available at the time.

Ok .. thanks for all the suggestions. Regarding the crysis idea .. if i keep the gpu_benchmark loop running for an hour, I suppose that would certify it stable, right?

No worries Jax .. I got the card for a much better bargain that I could get "normal" 8800gts cards, and I prefer BFG. The only cheaper cards was an Asus and Gainward, both unclocked but were only 10 quid less. Hence the BFG OC 🙂

Ah, fair enough.

I have nothing against OC cards, just that *MOST* of them are more expensive than their non-OC bretheren 😛

But yes, ANYTHING that stresses the GPU completely for ~1hour should be enough for it to be considered stable. I personally choose Lost Planet because I like playing while I stress test, and the game is very, very GPU limited compared to other games I have.
