So I found this guys flash drive outside of my condo. I got his name from a .doc, looked him up in my university's phone book, and emailed him. He replied and I told him to meet up so I could return it but he hasn't replied and it's been 2 weeks.

I was planning to give him another week or so before I'd burn all the files onto a cd (in case he ever wanted them back) and keep the drive for myself since I'm too cheap to go out and buy one. Am I going to hell?

Sounds reasonable enough to me. If he ever did reply, I'd give him back the drive though.

you made an effort, more than most people would have done. Most people would have just wiped it and kept it.

If he didnt pursue any further, he obviously didnt want it back that bad. Burn to a CD (very courteous of you) put it in a drawer, and enjoy.

It's exactly what I would do. If he replied and wanted it, i'd just reload the data and tell him to come pick it up

Very courteous of you, but after your plan, enjoy your free flash drive.

I would probably just toss the drive into a drawer and forget about it .
Its not worth even losing a minutes sleep over.

All those decisions of should I keep it, will he come for it, aren't worth the cost of a new drive.

I read that some ethical hackers did this once but the drive contained a backdoor trojan "hacksaw" they called it. The whole point was to put it somewhere it would be seen so the person would take it to a computer where it would then infect said machine and report back anything to the previously setup host...

flash drives are so cheap, if you've got his name from the campus directory, couldn't you just drop it in the mail?

If he wants it tell him to PP you $5 and you will mail it to him when you get the chance.

Is school in session? Maybe he is off somewhere until school starts?

Throw it in a drawer until the first week of school ends, then enjoy your new free drive.
